Bull sharks, where?

30 posts
  1. I have photographed bulls in the Bahamas with JASA on Wetpixel trips, both at Walkers Cay and Jim's site "Edge of the map" - as well as seeing them at other sites, when they have turned up. I have only been to Walker's the once (March 2006) and while there were several very big bulls there and we got nice shots, people commented that it wasn't the dive it was when the island was open. Another 4 years on, there could be even less.

End Of The Map has lots of bulls, particularly at the right time of year (I forget exactly when). But the bulls there are smaller and sleeker than the massive ones at Walkers. The setting is probably prettier, with better viz that Walkers. Although Jim generally doesn't go to that site specifically for the bulls.

Fiji seems to be the most reliable.

  2. Beqa bulls are the fattest compared to the ones I've seen from S africa,Moz n bahamas.

Having just dived Beqa 2 weeks ago, I can confirm that the bulls are OBESE compared to bulls in other areas of the world. These are some BIG, ROTUND, STOUT, bulls!!!!

Where to go to find bull sharks?

I was at Chumporn recently and the water was unusually warm so there were no bulls or whale sharks around.

    I have heard Cancun?

    Any suggestions?

  3. Thanks to all for the info.

  4. Anyone know what Fiji would be like around Xmas time?

And the dive there, you just sit on the bottom with no real interaction, correct?

Might have some time off at Xmas and its not too far away.

    cheers

  5. I had a friend that came back from Beqa last week. The locals told her the best time for Bulls are around Feb/March. She didnt see many bulls on this trip as the locals said the Bulls are starting to head up the creeks to pup.

She ended up getting close to the action and didnt have to wait in line with everyone else. But I think the bottle of rum she gave the guides helped her in getting a good spot ;-)

    Sounds good.

Anyone know who to contact for it?

I have emailed 3 places with no reply.

Also what cost am I looking at for the dive?

    cheers

  9. I've been to Fiji twice to do the Bulls with BAD (Beqa Adventure Divers; contact Andrew Cumming, manager: adventuredivers@connect.com.fj). I highly highly recommend them and will be returning in 2011 to photograph the large numbers of bulls showing up - peaking between May-August. One of their key divemasters, Rusi (pictured below) is truly one of the world's top shark whisperers.

No doubt, the conditions can be challenging with all the fish. The trick of course is to minimize the distance between the sharks and you ;-)

Many people only dive 1-2 days there in transit from liveaboards. IMHO this is a flawed approach. If you want to get nice shots, you have to put in the time. I've done 20 days (everyday) at Shark Reef, and some of the following images have gone on to sell in publications worldwide over and over again.

    Good luck!

Feeding bulls in the open water. They gave me complete freedom there, and I wasn't confined to the old fashioned shark dive MO. However, you have to be aware of your surroundings a bit bc the sharks are everywhere.
