That seems a bit harsh. There are a lot of great things Americans should be happy with themselves for, and I mean that in a sincere way.

Some Americans have been able to go to Cuba for scientific research, so it may pay you to see if you can find a way to attach yourself to an ongoing research project.

Speaking from an anecdotal point of view, friends have told me that traveling from the southern states to Cuba seems to draw less attention from the authourities than traveling there from the northern states. Don't know how much truth there is in that statement though. Others have told me that they usually enter Cuba through a third country (Jamaica, Canada, or Mexico) and return home from those countries after visiting Cuba. This seems more likely. I am told that the Cuban government does not stamp any passports with entry and exit stamps anymore. I can believe that as I didn't get a stamp in my Canadian passport when I visited the country.

On the downside of it, I have heard of individuals getting served with huge fines in the $5000.00 to $8000.00 range when they were found out. I had a very famous American photographer tell me, during a seminar, of a group of American travelers, he was among, coming from Cuba via a third country getting caught because one of the older ladies admitted being there because she said she didn't want to lie about it.

Anyway, times are changing, you could be traveling to Cuba, legally, sooner than you think.
