Isnt it PPI whats relevant here? (Not having software to hand) Would have thought 72PPI is the same quality no matter what the size is?
In print yes, but the key factor here is the size of the image.

I checked Alamy and, by my eye, photographers are asking for moderate $$$ for shots that I have and consider unremarkable. I think amature photographers should be careful about giving away images.
I have been helped along the road by several GREAT photographers. I have no interesting in causing them to lose money because they helped me out.
Regards
For me it’s a value proposition but I don’t think we have to limit ourselves to be paid in dollars or pounds. If I have a chance to enrich the lives of children with my images, I think that’s a great use for them. If our images can inspire people to think of the Ocean differently, if they can challenge the people who see them to change their behavior then they have enormous value.
I can safely assure you that I have never taken a sale away from a professional, no charity I support has ever paid money for a photograph, nor would they, but I get value from helping them. I get paid in the smiles on the children’s faces, the look of wonder in their eyes when they see a shark or a beautiful reef for the first time. I've been lucky enough to sell a few images for books and travel articles, got real money too. But the smiles are more valuable.
Cheers,
Steve
Mmmm...
I guess my position is I don't give a four X what happens to my photos!
If I did, sooner or later I'd be very disappointed or maybe angry and that would detract from what is, to me, a passionate hobby. I give my images away all the time, whether to conservation organisations, dive operators or travel agencies. Frankly, I don't place a value on my work as I think its all rubbish! Aren't we our own worst critics?
There was a recent occasion when some of my images were used by the BBC and were circulated to the UK national papers who made a pretty big splash. My view was that the quality and diversity of the marine life in the UK was put before millions and that's worth much more than a few shekels...

+1
My wifes friend at work always tells her how much he tells pretend tales of my images to his young son, he loves to see my photos, that makes me smile so much (especailly with no children of my own), I dont even know him! I even gave him one of my fossilised sharks teeth so he could spin another yarn!!
I am just not good enough. :-)

Hmmmmm....are you sure? Here's a good example about what might happen:-
Self portrait by minor ends up selling porn DVDs
Underwater images advertising porn is very unlikely, but its not unreasonable to see a shark image selling soup.....or a seahorse selling traditional medicine.
And the daily press pay more than a few shekels........three, perhaps four figures is not unusual. Why not charge them and then make a nice fat gift aid donation to the Wildlife Trusts (or other worthy cause) next time?
I have sold images in the past and given them away for free too for a good cause as previously mentioned.
Anything I put on the www is low res and has my name on it (which of course could be photoshopped out)
I must admit I do like seeing my images published and sharing this with friends.
