  1. Don't worry Scarlet wont be out by then anyway!! :)

So true and the chance of a housing by then is pretty much bugger all.

What I think those is the current RED 1'a will drop to below 12K (estimated cost of Epic S) and there are a fair few knocking around with cheaper (Aquavideo etc) housings, So you could pick up a 4K underwater Red unit for a reasonable price.

  3. Well just got back. Met Ted and he is a super nice guy. Epic was there and working, so was fixed lens Scarlet, played with both, looked at the R3D files and did some colour grading. Did some stuff with RED rocket too which was amazing editing 5K files natively no probs at all.

They are definitely alive and working, Epic is awesome, such a solid unit and we were in a dark theater and you could push it up to 5000 iso and it looked good, really good, in fact better than my 7D at 640 iso and that isn't looking good on a 5" screen, it looked good on a full size movie screen.

Great tools but definitely not the right choice for everyone,

Regarding timelines obviously Ted wasn't confirming but suggested

Epic will start going out to Stage 2 customers April / May and be available for purchase around Oct / Nov (maybe)

    Scarlet Fixed July / august

Epic S - End of the year

Good thing for Epic S is that it is the same body as Epic X which means same housing, so by the time Epic S is ready housings may also be already at the same time.

Oh one thing I did forget is that it (Epic) will come with either PL, Nikon or Canon mount and the Nikon and Canon will have access to Auto focus with tracking feature, plus you will be able to use electronic exposure. RED also also developing their own proprietor electronic mount.

  4. Get a better look at the Scarlet on engadget:

Has anyone heard of a housing manufacturer getting ready for the Scarlett? Hope someone like L&M is having a serious look at this camera. You'd want a quality housing to take a 6 grand camera underwater...

It looks like it'll make an excellent UW video camera - compact, quality, etc, at a not-completely-unaffordable price. Without the handgrip, it looks like it would fit into something not much bigger than an L&M Bluefin housing. But then, without the handgrip, the housing would need to supply the battery power.

    Time to start saving...

  5. I know Gates are looking at Epic, not to sure about Scarlet but it wouldn't surprise me if they do

  6. I know Gates are looking at Epic, not to sure about Scarlet but it wouldn't surprise me if they do

But the Scarlet, with a compact, electronic-controls housing, like the L&M, would be a near-perfect (today's technology) underwater video system for the serious enthusiast (with deep pockets).

I imagine that the Epic, in a Gates housing, would be large, very expensive and fiddly, more for a professional, funded team.

Thanks for the information, somehow I missed this when you posted this after you went. Sounds very impressive. How heavy did the Scarlet feel? Still trying to get a sense on the size/weight. (Took a look at the Engadget link, thanks Peter, and looks like it is relatively light in how the handled it)

One can imagine a Scarlet, with all the unnecessary modules removed (monitor, handle, control back), tucked tightly into a small housing that has external electronic controls and an external monitor. It'd be the dream UW video camera...

  9. I think the Scarlet fixed lens is going to be a great pick up and go camera with the EVF and it looks like a dream compact high quality UW camera system. I don't personally like electronic controls that much but I agree that you can imagine the Scarlet in a very compact housing which would certainly be great for traveling with. In the Engadget vid it did mention that there were manual controls in addition to the touchscreen/redmote so maybe manual housings for it are not dead in the water just yet. As the release finally draws near (strong rumours about it happening at NAB) its hard not to get excited about this camera!

Hmmmmm hang on haven't we been here before? :(

    Cheers, Simon

It is going to happen Simon, it is going to happen. I'll make a bet with you, if the Scarlet comes out this year, you buy me a Scarlet, if it comes out next year I will buy you a beer. Sound good?

    :(:B):

  12. The controls on scarlet/epic are menu based, button and dial driven. A simplified system would make it less complicated (and cheaper). I don't think we should assume Gates can't/won't go electronic, at least partially. They already need to attach some sort of monitor. What's hiring another engineer or 3 to cater to the new cameras. Perhaps they'll find a way to incorporate touch screen to the Red Pro display uw. :(

That said, there's no real need to have a fully function Redmote. A basic complement of functions, eg. aperture, shutter, custom profiles/presets etc would allow proper shooting.

  13. Regarding the size of Scarlet to Epic, there isn't too much in it. Scarlet is probably 20% smaller, and regarding weight I don't reckon that is an issue underwater due to having to add weight for neutral buoyancy.

I reckon fixed lens Scarlet will be shipping before the end of the year, realistically Epic is now shipping with close to 500 units being used in production so as long as all their production issues are solved Scarlet should be also being shipped in 2011 :(

I still want the flexibility of being able to change glass though and Epic S will be awesome.... I would really like an Epic X but it's a little to expensive to justify presently.

Wonder how the pricing will work out for a fixed-lens Scarlet, without all the bits that are unnecessary underwater? The 6K mentioned in the engadget video appeared to be for all the bits in his hand. if you take off the handle, the monitor and the redmote, would it be less? Of course, in that case, the housing would need to provide power and a monitor as well as the controls.

I think that you are right the Scarlet package I reckon will be under 10K ready to go.

Just saw this this am too regarding delivery schedules from Jim Jannard, I've been told Scarlet will be shipping before Epic S so looks like things are moving.

EPIC-Ms will continue to be made given that the parts and pieces are available. EPIC-M are not full featured... but have most of what you want.

EPIC-X Stage 2 will ship a few before NAB, production will continue after a slight delay due to Japan supply chain issues end of April. All features will not be available for early EPIC-X and upgrades will come as they are enabled.

All orders for Stage 2 and 3 will be shipped before summer's end 2011 (this year).

Order taken for EPIC-X at NAB will be shipped by summer's end.

EPIC-S will beging production as soon as EPIC-X orders are filled.

Hope this helps you with your planning...

    Jim
