How do you rationalize $$$ for diving

34 posts
  1. Sitting here trying to find the "right" excuse to go on another workshop with Alex Mustard that my husband would buy. Actually started working on this before the week was over.

So..wondering what's your best excuse, wildest one, cannot believe they bought that one, got by your brain excuse for spending money on diving.

Just asked my husband what my excuse is..."I want it!" And I don't stop until I get it. Thought it was harder than that :)

  2. I figure it is my only vice.

I don't need really fancy stuff, don't drink enough to get in trouble, don't gamble, and don't have 3 ex wives.

So the only thing I really spend a lot of money and time on is UW photography.

  3. Pam,

I asked my wife your question, What's the best excuse to spend money to go diving? Know what she said?

"Since when do you need an excuse to go diving? Why would you need one?" I love that lady.

    Cheers,

    Steve

  4. I simply say "This is what I live for.", but then I don't have to explain or justify to anyone.

  5. stay single :)

  6. Get your spouse hooked on the photo end of diving and you will be shocked at how easy upgrades become....

  7. I started an UW company to be able to give my wife a convincing excuse for going diving :)

  8. Its like breathing, drinking and eating. It NEEDS to be done. Luckily for me Louise has the same passion.

  9. I look at the profit/loss ratio of any given dive/trip and then decide if there is any money in it. Don't always get it right, but (touch wood) there are more profitable dives than losses so the children are fed and remain in clothes.

  10. Lie.

I tell my wife that if she does not let me go I will get myself a husband to pay for my stuff.

And then without looking up from her magazine, she points to the door, still not sure if that means go diving or get a husband. :P

(I guess there's also the possibility she never even heard me)

  12. Super question! :)

I was asked by someone once- 'Why are you taking photographs?? I mean, what's the point of spending all this money??'*

(*actually it was asked in a derisory tone- by someone who hasn't got an artistic bone in his body-but --interestingly enough--- is passionate about sport, which I for one ...can't stand)

I was caught on the hop at the time-and came up with an answer that could only be termed as a lame one.

So I thought about it- and applied the question to my underwater photography, scuba diving, and life in general..

If I was asked this question again-by the same individual...... this would be the answer....

I do it for the same reason that Leonardo DaVinci painted the Mona Lisa, why you follow your football team with a religious fervour (that I would find assinine)....why you take to the sports field in the p"*sing rain to get the seven shades of c*ap knocked out of you...

I do it because I can...I do it because I love to..... and I do it because it reminds me of how lucky I am to have the health, and the unconditional love and encouragement to do it.....and taking pictures makes me see the beauty of this world for what it is...and that I'm just a small transient part of it..

So Pam, celebrate your life thro' your muse...because it is short,....it is transient...and it is better to ......GO FOR IT WHEN YOU CAN...and sod the begrudgers!

  13. Find a partner with money ... Have rich parents ... Get a well paid job (although this can be detrimental)

    Credit cards!!!

  14. I guess I don't use an excuse, per se. I rationalize spending money on diving (and photography) because it makes me very, very happy. And if one can't pursue happiness in life, then what's the point?

  15. Or have a (young) son (CJ) who is as keen as U/W photog as you. It cost twice as much but I don't have to justify anything. Hehehe

The trouble is this applies to aviation as well. Did you think u/w photog cost a lot? Try aircraft as well!

    Oh well... (destitute) Tim

  16. There is no other activity that is as utterly satisfying as underwater photography. None as enchanting or fantastic.

Any rational explanation of why I do it could never capture the emotional connection I have to it. Just be smart, earn more than you spend and keep diving.

  17. I tell people that I drive a small car but a big camera. Seriously, I don't feel the need to rationalize. I work hard, why shouldn't I play hard?

  18. A second vote for getting your wife hooked on U/W photography!

  19. A second vote for getting your wife hooked on U/W photography!

    Or your husband! :)

  20. Get your spouse hooked on the photo end of diving and you will be shocked at how easy upgrades become....

While this is an approach that many of us have taken you do still need to be careful or you'll end up like me with your wife having all the expensive new kit while you make good with your battered old second hand stuff!

    Cheers, Simon
