  1. Hi John.

I didnt have the video lights of the Ikelites DS161 turn on. I dont think much of the light output of the DS161, might be good for macro as there isnt enough grunt.

I like the look of the Sola1200 as I have seen them in action.

    Regards Mark

That's what I suspected after looking at the specs on them. I have DS-125's right now and am thinking of getting them upgraded, but it's quite a lot more money for upgrading to DS-161 ($450) as opposed to DS-160 ($300) if they are not very effective.

BTW, I notice Ike just came out with their Fiber Optic adapter for DS strobes:

It doesn't do TTL. I would probably still prefer to use regular sync cables for that feature -- it is really nice for macro stuff.

    thanks,

    John

  2. John I would try out a pair of Ds160's and compare them with your Ds125's. I see the only difference is when shoot at full dump which now days I am not doing. Even for the big stuff I have been turning the power down on the Ds161's which might be on par or less than the power of the Ds125's at full power.

    Regards Mark

    Hi Mark.

I have some magic filters and very keen to use it also. Unfortunately the water colour hasnt been the best lately. Hopefully if we get clear water and there are leopards and manras about in shallow water I would love to try the setup with the magic filters and no stobes for both stills and video. I am even thinking about putting the camera on high continous.

I ordered my housing with the optical and ikelite bulkhead as I am thinking about getting the Inon Z240's in the future mainly for travel and macro.

    Cheers Mark

  7. You know, there is an optical slave which works great with just about any camera, and just about any strobe, including all the ike DS strobes of the last 5 -8 years..

The heinrichs digital adapter, is a sealed optical device, which you can get with nikonos plug. Then connect the ikelite strobe, using an ike - nikonos cable, and it will do ttl, if you want, or can be programmed for manual, pre-flash skipping, etc.

    Just FYI..
