  1. Mr Hogan reviews the D70 and the dRebel...

I've not seen this mentioned here yet...

Reviews by Thom Hogan of both the Nikon D70 AND the Canon 300D/KISS/dRebel went up this morning. I have not read them yet, off to do this now.

BTW; apparently www.bythom.com has moved servers recently and the change is still propagating through the DNSes

  2. Craig: I noticed that - I've been trying to hit his site since last week. Do you have his IP address handy?

    Cheers

    James

  3. James: I got to the new server first try this morning. Whois is giving me 209.35.183.209, but this is giving me "site not available" pages. You may just have to be patient, grasshopper :?

  4. Well, the comparison is obviously biased. He points out every aspect in which the canon is inferior to the Nikon but he didnt find a single thing the Canon has over the nikon besides the price(which would be hard to cover up). I am willing to accept that the D70 is a better camera overall but shurely the rebel has at least one nice feature. But he admits that he is biased so that is fine. Over all I think was pretty legit. But where did he get this from....

The Digital Rebel takes two types of lenses: the traditional EF mount lenses, and new EF-S mount lenses. The 18-55mm lens that comes as part of the US$999 kit is one of the latter, and mounts with a twist in the opposite direction than that of the original mount, which will take some getting used to if you're moving back and forth between lens types.

    Um....No it doesnt.

  5. Bill, if you've tried both cameras, I'd like to hear your comparison vs Thoms. If there are areas where you know the Rebel is stronger, I'd like to hear them.

    Cheers

Arr...I typed a reply and then when I went to send it It made me log in again and it forgot my post. But the main points were.

Nope, I havent tryed the D70 but even if I had I dont think that I have enough experience to make a comparison worth reading. The D70 is newer so it should be better but I still find it hard to belive that he couldnt find anything nice to say about the rebel.

    (P.S.) I prefer William.

  7. Sorry William it is.

I would like to try both cameras - but alas, I can't drop a couple of thousand $$$$ just for the experience...:-)

    Cheers

  9. I found the review to be biased, but I expected that when I first pulled up his site and had everything Nikon. I have had the D70 in my hands but not for a extended period, just from a pro acquaintance that bought one as his backup, it is a very nice camera. It is not a Canon, just like the Rebel will never be a Nikon. If you a dyed in the wool Nikon shooter, I don't think picking up any Canon would be very comfortable, and vice-versa for the Canon user. Nikon has definitely created a nice piece of equipment with the D70 learning somewhat from their time being 'behind'. That doesn't change my ability to take good or bad shots with my Rebel or any of my older Canon cameras and I don't think I will look at my pictures and think "Wow, that would have turned out MUCH better if I had a D70!!" :D:)

I saw the quote about the EF-S lens attachment as well, were did that come from?

  10. I saw the quote about the EF-S lens attachment as well, were did that come from?

The only thing I can think of is that he was actually thinking about the direction of twist for the EOS vs Nikon K mounts (which are in opposite directions) and that changing backwards and forwards between the two systems would be confusing.

I'm sure someone (probably hundreds of someone's   ) will email the man directly and ask him, and he'll either change the page or indicate what he was smokin'.

  11. Bill, if you've tried both cameras, I'd like to hear your comparison vs Thoms.  If there are areas where you know the Rebel is stronger, I'd like to hear them.

Well, I'm not Bill, but ISO 100 is much more important to me than all the bells and whistles.

  12. Bingo: check out Phil Askey's noise comparison graph at the bottom of this page:

    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond70/page14.asp

ISO100 is maybe not so important for x-sync since the D70 can sync up to 1/8000th but for noise, the D-Rebel looks twice as good.

Are we to deduce therefore there are no Richards?

  14. Again, score one for the S2Pro actually. The noise on the Fuji looks better than all of them across the board. I would have liked to see what the grey card comparison looks like on the s2 pro.

I can't explain exactly why, but I subjectively prefer the D70 grey card from iso 200 on up to both the canon (10d/dreb) and D100. To me, the Canon at 100 and the Nikon at 200 look about the same on the card, although the std deviation and color channel says otherwise. It could be that at such low noise there really isn't much of a difference.

So, as I see it the S2 pro advantages over the D70 are:

    Real TTL compatability

    lower noise

    lower moire

    Better body build

    better viewfinder

12 MP interpolated (is this an advantage?)

I'd have my housing already :-(

    The D70 advantages are

    lower price

better flash system iTTL/faster sync speed (once u/w strobes catch up)

faster continious speed with larger buffer

    smaller RAW file size

    liter body

better battery option (single rechargable battery)

    kit lens price boost

They both accept the same excellent lens system wich is a strong advantage over the Canon.

With e-bay prices on the S2pro, and a sigma basic 17-35 mm lens, I figure the s2pro is about $6-700 more expensive, which basically means I can get a 60 mm macro lens, flat port, and a 1GB card, or a 10.5 mm fisheye lens for free.

I'll bet that all three are more capable cameras than I'll ever fully utilize.

  15. ouch Stepehen ....

  16. I tried to call a co-worker Richard when I first met him and his response was "Please, call me Dick." Then he proceeded to tell me about when he won a safety award - and his prize was a pair of cover-alls that said "Dick Safety Award."

The x-sync is spec at 1/500 for the D70 has someone showed that it can do better? I haven't been following this.

The DRebel is spec at 1/200, but now that I have my toys set up, I can report that it will sync at 1/320 using Inon Z-220 strobes with no borders that I can see.

  18. Who cares?...........I'm still seeing stuff from c4040's that will knock your socks off!

Let's not forget that the major difference is the person holding the camera.......not the camera.......it's just a tool

  19. it's just a tool

Like a butcher knife, a harpoon or . . . or, an alligator?
