New UW challenger for the Shogun.....

  1. Looks good and compact but generally SoundDevices gears are not cheap, any price estimate?

  2. Models Pricing (from NAB):

    PIX-E5H (5", 1920x1080, HDMI only) $1,195

Thats a sweet deal, fingers crossed Nauticam look at a housing for it!
  3. Price's good, the HDMI version will record 4K too?

Not sure how Nauticam will react, seems other recorders are coming to the market, they might not run after all of them.

  4. I think due to this one having dedicated buttons to control it, it will lend itself better for use in a housing?

The Shogun, you are limited by the what you can control underwater due to it being touch screen, on this almost everything can be controlled via physical buttons/knobs

  5. I’m looking forward for the SoundDevices recorder, I like the size and the buttons/switches commands.

About the Nauticam housing for the Atomos, it seems they’ll use the remote port of the shogun to get some control. I’ve seen a version of the housing 10 days ago in the Tokyo Marine Fair, The housing has as a switch to turn on/off the Atomos internal fan and a mention of “Prolink” in the front housing, I’ve not been able to get information about what it was meaning.

  6. I'm not sure they are using an control interface, the buttons on the front, are pressing the touch screen and the ones on the side are 1) power on/off and 2) FAN on/off

The more I see the Shogun housing the more I think its way way too big! :)

  7. I have seen the shogun housing in person, it's the size of a 10" tablet, but a lot thicker. I don't know how heavy it is. I suspect it won't sell that well especially for the GH4 users. But for A7S users, it might be a different story.

If there is a housing for the BlackMagic URSA Mini, then GH4 + Shogun will be a bad solution since BlackMagic can shoot RAW and cost less than GH4 + Shogun combo. I think GH5 is a year away? :mocking:

  8. The issue with the BlackMagic's is the horrendous 2.88x crop, so even the 7-14mm comes out at 20mm eqv.

When I first saw that BM Micro Camera - I thought - yeah thats it! 4K, RAW, loads of Stops and an Active 4/3s mount - but then saw its still a S16 sensor :(

    * EDIT, I did believe it was 4k, alas its not! Still only 1080p

  9. Hmm..... I really think the industry should get on the game of letting users to start using Speedbooster. The Speedbooster technology has matured the past two years and it should be time for housing company to make adapter. With speedbooster, it would solve the crop factor issue, and increase the speed of the lens, a big win for consumers!

So far I think only one of the Nauticam ports for Sony lens lets user to use speedbooster, I wonder what the result/usability is like.

  10. Like you, more I look at the new SoundDevices recorder more it looks better suited for the A7S and the GH4 for underwater usage. No need record RAW, as the cameras cannot deliver it, 5inch screen will drive smaller housing and the SoundDevices recorder as only swtches and buttons for controls, no future issue here that we might have with the Atomos device if they change the Shogun firmware and messed up the screen layout for the Nautican housing buttons configuration.

I don't mean the Shogun is bad, I own one and it works very well, it just seems not to be the best option for underwater application.

About the BackMagic cameras, they looks nice and small, speedbosters likely to come if those two new cameras are becoming popular.

  11. I do love the idea of the speedbooster. Especially the newer ones which give you aperture control via the camera

The issue for me it... Does a speedbooster fit inside the Nauticam n85 port diameter?

You will have to use the n85 to n120 adaptor to use the canon/Nikon lens ports anyway, but unless Nauticam use the n120 port system on the BM cameras, not sure how it will work.

  12. Has anyone got the Nauticam Shogun in the water yet? Using one ball attachment to hold such a large surface area housing will most probably have some sort of flickering and thus not have a steady monitor while moving no?

  13. Looks to be using something a lot more substantial than a ball joint. There looks like a cross member and a locking bar

  16. About the Shogun housing, here what they seems to plan using for the connection between the two housing:

Unless they change the design, I thought the Shogun is use with a big cheese plate:

  18. Well, that puts it right out of reach then. Holy moly.

Perhaps they are aiming at the Red and Arri users. Not the A7s or GH4 users....
