I shoot in manual mode with my olympus EM5 but I cannot get my Inon 2000 strobes to sync with the second curtain when set up for manual (with the magnets installed), however, I tried with the magnets removed and it seems to work while in manual mode (I can vary the exposure via the strobe settings in the manual range).
It must be something to do with preflash timing in the second curtain mode. If the preflash occurs too long before the main flash then the Inons may not recognise the second signal - does anyone have a fix for this, as it would be useful to have the option to change underwater. Maybe this is the excuse I needed to upgrade to Inon 240s which can be switched between modes underwater!
Thanks for any suggestions,
Mark
Hi Mark,
understanding magnet in / out: Maybe this helps (another user confirmed the result for the S2000
I do not quite understand your settings; you are talking about a "pre-flash". If you use manual strobe mode on the Inon, the camera flash should be set to manual with 1/64th power, and there will be no pre-flash.
Thanks for the comment Jock,
From what I have observed, selecting second curtain on the camera makes it impossible to have the flash operating as manual on the camera. There are times when second curtain flash is an advantage.

Mark

Old post, but I have the same issue
Oly EM1 mk2 with Retra ProX
It seems that in 2nd curtain configuration, there is always a pre-flash, so it prevents using Manual mode on the flash side.
(TTL on Retra is ok)
Can someone please confirm same behaviour ?
Thanks

Worth talking to Oskar at Retra? I thought the Retra strobes had a way that you could set it up to ignore pre-flashes?

If the camera is emitting a pre-flash (TTL) and you wish to utilise manual power adjustment please choose "Smart SL" mode. If you haven't changed any settings for your Retra Flash Pro X with your smartphone/tablet then it is set by default to position "U". Otherwise please connect your Retra Flash Pro X to your smartphone and assign "Smart SL" to position "U".
Please read the instructions for Smart SL mode for details about the calibration process, operation and limitations when using this mode with rear curtain sync.
Note: long exposure in "Smart SL" is limited to about 1/5 second because the flashgun can not wait to infinity for the main flash and there needs to be a timeout.

Yes there is no way to set the camera in manual flash and second curtain with the little accesory strobe. It might be possible on a separate Olympus strobe - setting it on the strobe menu, but that doesn't help you underwater.

I will try this configuration.
1/5 seconds should not be a serious limitation...
