Subal D70 Dual Synch sockets

  1. I too believe that both of the viewfinders come out of the same factory. I own a Sealux CD70 and my review of the housing was posted on this site recently. ( http://www.wetpixel.com/module-pagesetter-...-3-pid-46.phtml )

When I posed the question to someone who had queried Subal on this point they informed me that Subal's response was that their viewfinders were produced by the same manufacturer that made their ports.

From pricing on Sealux's website the difference between the CD70 with and without viewfinder is 474 Euros; that's about US$602 for the Sealux viewfinder.

Sealux also informed me that it would be possible for them to transfer the viewfinder to another housing in the future (one of their's obviously) if the original houing is sent back to them. I posed the scenario to them when discussing upgrades to future housings for yet to be released DSLRs.

The viewfinder itself is fitted to the housing in much the same way as any other port. It is an independent component and has a thread which screws through the housing wall and is secured on the inside by a circular nut. I suspect that with the correct spanner it is about as easy to install as a strobe port.

  2. I do think as well it could be that easy if there is enough space and someone would do the retro-fit.

The Sealux online shop lists a "GD viewfinder retrofit" for under 500$ for the 10D housing.

"Alexander Mustard - No longer have a UW digital camera - watch this space!"

Does it mean you've cleared the space already for the D2x?? :-)

  3. Yeah! D100 and Subal were sold yesterday (sob)!

Which actually made me a bit sad. I announced that I wanted to sell them at a BSoUP meeting on Wednesday and I was made an offer before I finished the announcement! And we agreed to swap money for camera at the Visions Conference, yesterday. They have gone to a friend so I can still visit!

Basically after Bali I had a gap in trips, so it seemed a good time to sell the D100, while it is still a current camera and I could get a good price.

I was intending to do a price breakdown on the experience. Looking at the number of shots taken divided by the difference is purchase and re-sale prices. I think I will ignore picture sales in the equation otherwise it will be a profit!

p.s. D2X is favourite for the replacement. Kodak in a distant second place. I do not want a Canon (just a personal preference). Depends on price and low ISO image quality of D2X - I will never move it from ISO100. Full frame doesn't bother me because all my lenses are good and I want the D2X AF! I'm looking forward to seeing the Subal D2H/D2X housing in Antibes - if it is there.

  4. Does anyone know if the Subal viewfinder can be retro-fitted to a D70 housing (without one)?

    Alex

Yes it can. Subal started shipping the housings a good month before the virwfinders were available (in the US anyway). Rand got his housing right before his LC trip and didn't get his viewfinder until he got back (I believe).

  5. Thanks Dave. Now can a Sealux viewer be retro-fitted to a Subal? Or ideally one bought straight from this mystery factory - without either of their stickers on it!!!

Plus thanks Colin for the info, too.

  8. Moving back to the original thread..... I've been told by a Subal distributor that with Dual Synch sockets you can't connect two non-TTL flashes only two i-TTL flashes or only one non-TTL Flash

Does anyone know if this is correct???

  9. I'm not sure what your Subal distributor meant. I use the Subal D10 housing for Nikon's D100. It has 2 separate synch sockets. I use two older strobes with the housing, both on non-TTL. They work fine.

Maybe it is different with the D70 camera.

  10. I've just heard directly from Subal, who confirmed what some of you already knew. The FS2 housing for the Fuji S2 cannot be retrofitted with the new optics - apparently the controls on the housing back don't leave enough room. Sad.

  11. Moving back to the original thread..... I've been told by a Subal distributor that with Dual Synch sockets you can't connect two non-TTL flashes only two i-TTL flashes or only one non-TTL Flash

Does anyone know if this is correct???

I suspect that in fact it is the other way round, ie. you can connect in the following ways:

    i) two non-TTL flashes;

ii) only one i-TTL Flash; or

iii) one i-TTL capable Flash in non-i-TTL mode (A or M) plus one non-TTL flash.

This is the case on the Sealux housing anyway. The i-TTL port (for the housed SB-800 Speedlight) is wired for all pins whereas the non-TTL, Nikonos style port only uses two active pins. I currently use a traditionally wired Nikonos style (non-TTL) port which works with the Inon optical converter in either configurations ii) or iii) above. With the optical converter it is possible to run 2 Inon optical strobes (D180) off the single non-TTL port; three strobes in total on two ports. My point is that whether Sealux or Subal I strongly suspect that the pin configurations and wiring from hot shoe to port are similar and that only one strobe can operate in i-TTL mode.
