Flash +- in D70 housings

  1. Flash +- in D70 housings

    OK,

Another question in my search for a replacement for my much loved Hugy:

I have been looking at the various housings for the Nikon D70 and it seems some of them do offer access to the flash +- adjustment that Nikon has (again) moved to a different location and some do not. Some, I'm not shure of.

Sealux definitely does, Sea&sea, Ikelite, Subal and Nexus apparently do not. How about Aquatica and the rest of the makers?

I do realize this is a bit of a moot point at the moment, but I'm shure in no time flat someone will come up either with a iTTL compatible flash or at least an adapter. And with my current N80 setup I have grown fond of this particular adjustment.

  2. The Aquatica housing for the D100 and the S2 have it. I don't know about D70 housings.

  3. Timo, FYI The Ikelite housing has a control lever for flash compensation. Also, Ikelite is planning to offer iTTL for their housings in the near future.

  4. The Ikelite Ittl will only work with the Ikelite strobes. Which bums me out since i do not have them.

  5. If you are talking about the Exposure compensation button next to the on/off switch then yes, the Aquatica does control it..... I have the aquatica housing for the D70 and will be taking it into the water for the first time this weekend

    No,

I'm talking about the flash compensation button that is next to the internal flash at the upper left side of the body above the M/S/C and lens release switches.

  7. The Ikelite housing for the digital rebel used flash compensation but it's not through a button on the camera. The flash compensation can be built into the iTTL controller, so strictly speaking, the button on the camera does not have to be used.

Look at a Nikon flash for example, you can do the flash +/- on the flash, OR on the camera, or a combination of both.

My bad, that is a button I have not used. The Aquatica does not have a control for it

  9. Hugy have a EOS 300D housing (I don't know if others are on their way) and you could get a Mattias Heinrich's (spelling surely wrong) converter for your strobes.

It might be cheaper to switch camera brands than housing brands? Although I don't know about this button on a Canon.

  10. Ikelite housing provides a control for camera flash compensation. Question is do we want to provide both like we did in the eTTL Canon conversion circuitry?

    Well,

Actually I might be looking at a pretty sweet deal on a Hugy D100 housing at the moment. For me this is a moderately lucrative proposition since I already have a D100 at home, complete with a small fortune invested in Nikon glass bot for UW and topside use. We also have two more Nikon SLRs in the family...

However, with René Hugenschmidt now out of the business and with the new owner of Hugyfot lacking firmly communicated commitments as to what they are going to produce beyond Leica housings, I just want to cover all my bases before committing my hard-earned cash.

ATM it looks like it's going to be the Hugy for the D100, but I still have a couple of weeks before I actually see the money...

  12. There are quite a few used D100 housings out there for sale. I see 3 of them in the classified section here:

    Oh yes,

I have been looking at a few ads also elsewhere on used D100 housings. I quess now is the time to buy one when all serious folks are upgrading and these "old" housings seem to go at a pretty reasonable price.

Actually I have been waiting for something to turn up for sale in Europe, which would make the logistics a bit simpler.

  13. Ike, re"Ikelite housing provides a control for camera flash compensation. Question is do we want to provide both like we did in the eTTL Canon conversion circuitry?"

    http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/2canonTTL.html

Based on my experience with Ikelite TTL for my 5050, I think it's important that I can change flash compensation if I want to, but it doesn't have to be super easy to do as I seldom changed it. In fact what I like about TTL is that the camera does the work. If I found instead that I had to keep on fiddling with flash compensation I'd start to think that manual power was just as good as TTL.

Ditto for the manual mode capability on the Ikelite Canon eTTL implementation. Again, I want TTL not manual. And in that rare case where I want manual e.g. broken sync cord, I can just switch my DS 125s to 1/2 power and hope they work.

My bottom line. I think the Ikelite eTTL solution is really cool. But all I want and all I need for my D70 is TTL like I had on my 5050.

  14. Peter, as a TTL user, I really like flash compensation control.

The correct exposure is not always the exposure you want for a certain shot/effect. It is nice to be able to pre-select half or one stop "underexposed" and not have any trial and error involved.

    My humble $.02

  15. Canon Rebel did not provide flash exposure compensation without the Russian update, so we provided in our conversion circuitry. The D70 and more expensive Canons provide in the camera, prompting my query if we should also include in our conversion circuitry?

  16. If it's in the camera Ike, and there is an ergonomic control/lever to access the + and - buttons, then I would think that's good enough. On the Seacam or Aquatica housing for the S2, or any housing with a "stay depressed" lever it's nice because you can lock down the flash +/- button, take a shot, roll up one stop, take another, then roll down 2 stops and take a third. That's an awesome way to flash bracket for macro shooting.

The Nikon cameras will take a photo with the Flash +/- button depressed. Does the 20D?

    Cheers

    James

  17. As James wrote. if I have the control (And I have it :) ) in the camera its more then enough for me. I prefer it like it is without and modification to my existing housing.

The only problem is that is pop-up the internal flash.

  18. Re "The only problem is that is pop-up the internal flash."

I put two small pieces of scotch tape on the sides of the flash popup to keep the flash from being accidentally deployed.

  19. However, with René Hugenschmidt now out of the business and with the new owner of Hugyfot lacking firmly communicated commitments as to what they are going to produce beyond Leica housings, I just want to cover all my bases before committing my hard-earned cash.

Just a quick note to the above statement I made:

I'm looking at a new Hugyfot price list for their lineup of housings and at least this seems to indicate that the doubts I expressed above are no more valid.

Also, the D70 housing we have seen in another thread seems to point to the same direction.
