  2. Wow, those look great! Thanks for posting. I especially like the first exposure with the sun in the frame. How deep? What were your exposure settings? That's a good sunball.

    Cheers

    James

  3. Awesome shots! Cant decide if i like Umbria or Shaab Rumi better

  4. Wow, very cool. Thanks for sharing. Love to see more.

    Cheers.

  5. Excellent sunball exposure........but, the second one is my favorite :D

Very well done on all of them....

I'm interested in the shooting data also

    Karl

  6. Were those pictures taken underwater?

  7. Stop it! Just stop it! :D

    Fantastic shots

  8. Thank you for all the nice comments :D The 10-22mm is a fantastic lens and Sudan is a photo paradise.

Here is also an example of 22mm shot. It's 50% crop of the original and I think as a wide angle lens it gives you quite a lot of flexibility even shooting shy sharks.

I posted next to the pictures some shooting details as you reqested.

  9. The 20D has handled the sunball very impressively. And I like your shots. Thanks for sharing.

On my screen they all look a bit lacking in punch/saturation - and the water is a bit grey. But I guess that is completely flexible and could easily be overcome in RAW conversion. The landrover shot might look nice in B&W? Its a strong image and could be stunning.

The water in the shark, above, looks very noisy and very unlike what I'd expect from a 20D. What ISO were you using, there?

As usual, I don't mean to sound negative. Great shots, especially first time out with the camera.

  10. Dareck,

You're twisting my arm to upgrade. I am in fact looking into applying your mods to my housing, in a reversible way. Does your Black thumb lever still operate the AE lock button on the 20D? The reason I ask is I use that for AF when diving.

The shots you've posted look great. Looks like you're increaing your average from 20 shots per 8 years

    Best regards,

    Martyn

  11. Alex: thanks for the comments. I always appreciate a word from the best :D I prepared the shots in few minutes just after returning home so for sure they might be improved. However on my screen the water looks blue and I use this monitor for photeditting all the shots published in my magazine so I trust one.

The landrover would be more appealing in B&W for sure but its not my shot so I left it as it was.

The shark has a noisy water coz I add some noise after removing backscatter. Now I think I exagerated.

Rattus: I dont use the AE lever as I use the camera in 99% in manual mode but as far as I remember it doesnt work. I may take a closer look and tell you if you may adjust it for the 20D.

    Thanks Dareck,

As I say I use the rear lever in conjunction with one of the custom functions to assign the AE Lock button to Autofocus. That way I get one lever for touch autofocus, the other for shutter release. I haven't set either of my lenses up for manual focus, so this is very useful for me, especially with the D60 being a little fussy with AF in low light.

    Cheers,

    Martyn

  13. Darecky - Were there any suprises with the camera to know about? I'll be taking my 20D setup to T&C in 4 days and it's always good to know what those before you found...

Also - did you shoot with any other lens?

  14. Beautiful shots!! I love the mood on the Umbria shot. I imagine how happy you are with your new rig! :D

    Thanks for sharing,

    David.

  15. The set worked perfectly. I had once error 99 but after shut down it was gone. To be honest I've been waiting for such a set for a long time (D60 and sigma 14mm was not wide enough and at the same time not long enough for sharks ie). 16mm is great for most of panoramas you want to shoot and the 35mm gets you closer to shy fish. 8Mpix let me publish double page spreads in my magazine so the dream come true :D

I had few shots (against strong sun) when my new YS-120 were not powerful enough but this is another story.

I didnt use any other lens as Sudan is mainly WA place. Some macro stuff i shoot with my Olympus 5060 backup camera.

Rattus: one explanation I use only the camera in manual mode not the lenses :) AF works OK

  16. Visibility?

    Were those pictures taken underwater?

What was the viz on these dives? I also feel these images are clear almost to a fault! What is it about these images that feels light daylight? Maybe even lighting? Or was the viz outrageously good?

  17. I hate these shots - they're AWESOME !

Damn Canon for not making this lens compatible with the 10D

  18. The viz was up to 30m

Actually this was the lens that made me change D60 to 20D

  19. New 20D reserved and ready to pick up tomorrow morning.

Spare camera plate ordered for housing in case I mess it up.

10-22mm tentatively planned for sometime next year.

My christmas bonus came at just the right time and my local pro photo outlet is doing a cutthroat deal on the 20D kit.

The lowlight focussing and the start up speed are serious wins for me over the D60. I can't wait to get this under the waves.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice Dareck, I'll let you know how I get on with any further housing mods. First off is getting the other lever working.
