Happy birthday Alex! To do this properly you need to do 30 shot, and then go to a bar with your buddies and do the same.

Happy Birthday Alex and welcome to the 30's!!
It's always a pleasure to see your work. And I mean that literally, it really pleases the viewer to see such a nice combination of aesthetics and technique.
Peace,
David.

Great stuff Alex!
Hiya Alex,
Happy 30. Excellent images. I particularly partial to the mating shot. Hope the next 12 months are even better for you
Cheers,

Happy Birthday Alex,
An fantastic selection of images, truly inspirational. You have had a great year.
The top down view on the clownfish is my personal favourite - it is a technique I have seen used on hammers and other sharks but never on anything smaller. I am going to have to have a go. Was there much post production to get the image to its present state?

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. And Joe, thanks for the tip! Here are some of the shots from last night. Note the top down camera angle - most creative!
I would post an image of me - but they are all too incriminating!

Hi Alex
Can you tell me how you go about shooting a portfolio. How do you approach it, is it well thought out before the time?
Thanks
Paul

Thanks for all the birthday wishes.
Hi Paul, there are many types of portfolios. I was working on a themed portfolio - where all the images are related. Basically I wanted to produce 6 different interpretations of the same subject matter.
When a portfolio is to be viewed/judged as a whole it is important that the pictures work together - rather than it just be a collection of your 6 or 8 best shots. When the subject matter is the same in each picture I feel that the trick is to try and make each image different. When the subject matter is different then you must look for other themes to bind the portfolio together. For example search for subjects with similar colours, shapes or take images with similar compositions etc.
A portfolio that represents your work - that is to be viewed sequentially is very different. And is much more about showing the quality, originality and diversity of photographs.

Hi Alex
Thanks for the response. The reason I asked the question is that in May we have our annual underwater shootout here in South Africa at Sodwana Bay and this year there is talk of using portfolio as the subject. This is a new concept to me as I have never done anything like that before. I will need to put some thought into what I want to shoot.
Thanks
Paul
I met two of your fellow BSoUP members by the name of Janet and Mike Maloney last year at Wakatobi. Not sure if you know them but if you do please tell them I say hi.
