Multimedia Projectors

  1. I've been browsing multimedia projectors on the B&H website and I'm baffled by the large number of different models that are available. Can anyone recommend any particular brand or model. I'm looking for something that would be good enough give presentations in a moderate size function or conference room.

Are there any discussion groups along those lines that anyone would have a link to.

    Thanks,

    Larry

  2. I bought a Dell 3300MP during one of Dell's crazy deals (posted all the time at places like http://techbargains.com). It was about $1250, and has gotten favorable reviews, especially for the price. 3 lbs, 1024x768, bright, and non-offensive color.

Comes with tons of cables, and you can buy a 6-in-1 reader (installs internally) so you can just stick flash cards in the thing.

  3. We use A NEC LT260 NEC DLP unit that produces high quality in XGA format. The successors to the 260/240 units that were produced a couople of years ago are: LT245 with an output rated at 2200 ANSI lumens and the 265 rated at 2500 ANSI lumens.

We researched quite a bit before buying and we selected the NEC brand for a couple of reasons:

    - Image quality

    - Color adjustments

    - Sealed optics (dust will not find its way between the lenses)

    - A threaded front lens mount on which ou can put a UV filter for protection or a ND to lower the output in case you are too close to your screen.

    - Twin VGA inputs

You can probably find the LT 240 (1600 ANSI lumens) or the LT 260 (2100 ANSI lumens) at reasonable cost these days.

Suggestion: Stick with DLP for image quality, and select a projector that has a high contrast ratio.

Drawback of NEC: Price is higher.

Herb Segars, another Wetpixel contributor switched to NEC LT240 last year and he seems to be quite happy with it, maybe he will want to add some comments to mine.

One important thing to remember, the software you use to display your images may also affect their quality.

If you want to compare different projectors with a quick test, go to http://showsage.com/utilities.html and download their display evaluator software and the accompanying instructions. Takes 10 minutes to compare two projectors with this freeware.

  4. NEC's price is about $2700-$2800 for the NEC LT260 NEC DLP. I am still looking around, but am leaning towards this unit.

That's a little high Joe. Tigerdirect has a the LT 265 for $1999. Projector People have a price of 2099.

I ended up getting a Mitsubishi XD400 from Projector People. I'm very happy with it so far. The color is very true in sRGB mode. The projected images look the same on the screen as they do on my computer screen.
