Close up lens for 105mm in Ike's housing

13 posts
  1. Hi guys,

I'm finally ordering a Nikkor 105mm lens from B&H. Does anyone own a D70 in an ikelite housing, and use the autofocus/manual focus flat port (#5508.05) with a close up lens on the 105mm lens ? I'm looking for something that will be slim enough to fit inside the port.

    Thanks,

    Oren

  2. My Nikon 4T will touch the port at maximum focus....I use it anyway because you have to almost be touching the subject to get it to the maximum....the filter doesn't rotate while focusing, so the port isn't damaged

Did you try a 3T ? do u know if it's smaller ? or you decided to go for the 4T and get maximum magnification ? :D

  4. I've got both....they are the same size....the 3T will allow you to back off a little more from the subject, so it will be easier to acheive maximum focus and hit the port...hope that makes sense?

  5. Ryan mentioned that this would be a problem. He also said that Ike was working on a fix for this in the new version of that port but that Ryan hadn't seen one to test yet.

I'm ready to house the 105mm as well but was waiting to hear on this issue. I think I'll really want to try the 3T and 4T and the port will be a long-term investment so I'll wait until the problem is solved. Since the port is specially designed for this lens and the Nikon 3T and 4T are common OEM parts and specially designed for that lens this should be the expected combination with this port.

  6. I've had customers report that they are using diopters in this combination with success. They could be misguided, or using a thin single element diopter, not the multielement Nikon diopters (which are too thick). I was confused on this issue for some time, based mixed feeback from customers, but have since verified that Nikon diopters don't fit in the port.

I don't know of a new version of this port being built (although lengthening a few mm shouldn't be very difficult, and wouldn't cause any adverse affects).

Interesting. Can anyone explain the difference (in photo quality) between a single element and a multielement diopter ?

Ryan, do you know of any +4 diopter that fit inside the port ? (which brand?).

    Thanks.

  8. I don't know, as I only have the Nikon 4T here...

The easiest option I can think of is a Nexus Wet Lens, which could be removed underwater when you didn't need it, and is quite strong.

  9. I didnt know it fits ikelite's flat port. Interesting.

I think i'll first try the 4T. According to Karl's experience it sounds like it should work, and it should get the best results (optically). I might try the wet lens later on (i guess that sometimes you dont neet extra magnification the 4T gives you).

Ummm... i wonder what i'll get with a 4T AND a wet lens on. :-D

  10. Be aware that when you use the 3T or 4T, your maximum focus distance is reduced to about +/- 18" .....what you gain in close focus, you loose in trying to focus beyond +/- 18"

That's one of the nice things about using the Woody's Diopter....it slips on and off the end of the port....they make 3 sizes....verify that you get the size for the Ikelite flat port

focusing beyond 18" :D ??? that would have to be a really big nudibranch :(

  12. focusing beyond 18"  :D  ??? that would have to be a really big nudibranch  :(

Oren, I hope that you know that there are tiny creatures other than nudibranches :) I'm starting to think that your mentally illness is much severe then what was expected :(
