port combinations for seacam/canon fisheye lens?

  1. I'm on the cusp of dropping some cheddar on a fisheye, which is the piece I am missing in my kit here, and I was curious about ports that work well with the Canon fisheye. I'm shooting a 1D Mark II in a Seacam housing. I've got the superdome that I'm using with my 17-40 and I'm hoping that dome will work fine with the fisheye as well.

    Can anyone confirm that?

  2. Yes, I shot the 1DmkII and the fisheye with the Superdome and no extension ring and got great results. The photos aren't very exciting, but at least they are sharp and show the field of view:

Cool, thanks James. It's nice to know I just have to add the lens, and no more port hardware.

  4. Hi Jon

I've used the Seacam fisheye port with the Canon EF15mm, and the Superdome with a Nikon 16mm fisheye (both with film cameras). I couldn't see any difference in quality between either combination (both excellent). Seacam also confirm that both the Fisheye port and Superdome can be used with the Canon EF15mm (with no extenders). The quality with the EF14mm and Nikon 14mm is also superb, providing you get the right extenders.

    Hope this helps

  5. The Superdome may be less than a full hemisphere. I have sent queries to Seacam to find out but have not received a reply. The diameter they give on the Seacam web page may be its optical and not its actual diameter if this is the case. I have been trying to resolve this ambiguity with all of their domed ports. I suspect that the fisheye port is the only full 180-degree hemispherical port that they make.

  6. Hi Tom,

I haven't measured them, but as I can see with the eye, the Fisheye port is a hemisphere, the Superdome not. The Fisheye port is around 7" diameter, the Superdome just over 9". That said, I can confirm the Superdome works very well with Nikon's Fisheye's (even wide open). Possibly the huge depth of field of these lenses allows them to work with non-hemispheres?

Thanks Steve. I've only shot a couple images with the EF14mm, but I like the coverage I get with the superdome over that rectilinear. I've been very busy shooting the 17-40 as well with the superdome, which I really like. I'll spend some more time later this spring (recovering from a herniated disk in my back right now - can't shoot right now, the only work I can do is behind the computer...bleah.) with the 14 and the 15 in the superdome.

    Thanks for the response!
