D70 Ikelite setup

  1. Hello all - this is all fairly new to me, so bear with me... I am looking to get get set up with an ike housing and dual strobes for a D70. I've been checking out the various options and this is what I've come up with so far. Does this cover it or is the more (or is there anything not right)?

I am looking to get a housing with a dome port that will work with the D70 and the Nikon 18-70mm zoom, and Nikon 12-24mm zoom. I have come up with the following, but am unsure if this is all that I will need:

    Ikelite D70 housing (6807)

    Ikelite Dome Port (5503.55)

    2 x Ikelite Substrobe DS-125 (3944.75)

Will that dome port work with both those lenses? As well, if I have 2 substrobes DS-125 are they both connected to the camera via ttl cable or do I need a slave sensor?

  2. Warren,

Get the new housing 6807.1 with iTTL as you can shoot both manual and TTL strobe power control with it.

Re the dome port, the 5503.55 will work for both the 18-70 and the 12-24, but you will have to remove the dome shade when using the 12-24 to prevent vignetting i.e. seeing the lens shade in the corners.

Another alternative, if you don't already have the 12-24 is to get either the Nikon 10.5mm or Sigma 15mm lens for wide angle. I have all three and prefer the 10.5 and the 15 to the 12-24. For details and sample pictures, see the following URL.

And yes, the dual sync cord is the way to go. No controllers needed.

  3. Peter - again, thanks for the info. You're the best!

Anyway, questions again. For the Nikkor 10.5mm lens, I noticed on your site you are using the 5503.15 dome. Will this lens work with the 5503.55 or am I going to get some serious vignetting? And with dual DS-125, are diffusers a must?

    Thanks again for your insights.

    Warren

  4. Warren, the 10.5mm will not work with the 5503.55

I use the diffusers on my DS-125's for all my shots....just a personal preference

  8. Warren,

Where did you order your 6807.1 housing from as I was under the impression that these were not available yet.

    Thanks

It isn't available yet - I have it on order from Ikelite. The last they told me was the it probably wouldn't be until at least the end of May/beginning of June until they start shipping, but they would not commit to a date. Apparently they are still working on the software. If you're looking, you should put your order in as there is a growing waiting list from what they told me.

  10. Hermit, Make sure that you want the dual strobe kits you ordered... as you indicate

that you have ordered two DS-125 strobes, two arm kits, two chargers and two cables...

you could forgo the extra charger and the cables .... for the cables, you will have to

order the special dual sync cable to run two strobes...

  11. Yep, I realize that there are two chargers and two single TTL cables. I have on order the dual strobe TTL cable as well. There wasn't a strobe package to accomodate this, unfortunately.

  12. Ok, wasn't sure if you knew that you would end up with duplicates...

    Thats $335 worth of cables...

some people to get the dual setup just buy 1 strobe kit... then purchase the second strobe, arm set and dual cable seperatly...

I thought about doing just that. But I didn't seem to be saving a whole lot.
