Sigma 15mm FE vs. Canon 10-22mm

  1. Mike,

if you are still interested to go for 10mm, my dealer has promised delivery on 11th this month. From size it's easier to apply zoom gear than my Sigma 12-24 which has been the maximum possible zoom ring diameter for Sealux. I could post the 10-20's zoom ring diameter if it will arrive here in time for you.

Over here Tokina 12-24 and Sigma 10-20 are about the same price (and I like the Sigma ultrasonic HSM AF).

    regards,

  2. Thanks for the offer Julian, but I went ahead and ordered the Tokina today as B&H just got a shipment of them in. Figured I better jump on it before they ran out again. After reading all the reviews that rank the Tokina much higher than the Nikon 12-24 and even the Canon 10-22, I decided to give it a try. Someone here's gotta be the guinea pig, right? You're right about the HSM motor, though -- much smoother and quieter. But stores here won't even take a pre-order deposit on the Sigma yet and I need to sh&t or get off the pot as they say if I want to be ready to use the lens on my next trip. Besides, if I decide on the Sigma later, there's always eBay!

PS I'll let you know what I think of the Tokina when it gets here . . .

  3. Woohoo - so that link I posted was useful to you. I'm glad. Excuse me while I go ask B&H for my commission now...hehe j/k.

    Cheers

  4. Don't be so quick to give yourself all the credit James (I could hear you typing that message as soon as I finished posting mine :) ). I was considering it before but was really hoping for a 10mm wide end. As it happens, your post did make me pay a bit more attention to the reviews but the bottom line is that I just can't get another suitable lens to fit my camera at the moment. In all honesty, it was the discussion on FM's forums, not the photo.net one that really piqued my interest.

  5. Heh - no sweat Mike - I was joking of course. I'd like to try it on my 20D and 1DmkII. Especially the 1.25 crop camera - I'm wondering when it would start filling the frame.

There is a picture on this page that gives an idea of the vignetting at 12mm:

  8. Mike,

Yes, there seems to be an overall agreement that this lens beats the others. Including german photo magazine’s results (which are usually sponsor orientated - but surprisingly not in this case). I am sure you have a winner. Having stated HSM, I expect 10-20’s HSM to be as slow as the Sigma 12-24’s one which is not the same sprinter as Sigma HSM lenses with longer focal length or the Canon USM WA's. No faster than non ultrasonic motors. Just nice to have manual override for topside.

Having ordered a pig in a poke I hope the 10-20 won’t disappoint.

    regards,

  9. Also found this while poking around a bit more.

Really cool graphic of the different fields of view. You can see, for example, how the 15mm fisheye is wider on the diagonal but narrower on the horizontal and vertical axes. The big difference in field of view between 10mm and 12mm was a bit more than I thought it might be, but the Tokina 12-24 will arrive on my doorstep tomorrow and the Sigma 10-20 is MIA. BTW, B&H is taking pre-orders for the 10-20 as well now.

  11. Ahh, great work Mike. I saw those pictures of the coke machine last year, but haven't been able to find them again. They were on a website in Japanese the first time I found them. Excellent comparison.

  12. Mike,

It's nice to see I'm not the only one spending bundles of that hard earn cash in a hurry for an upcoming trip. I'm taking the 10-22 on the trip so you're welcome to take as many real world 'toothy' subject photos with the two as you'd like.

Life was much simpler when it was just me and my 5050.

Alas, my antiquated EOS 10D won't work with the 10-22. That's what started this mess :) .

    You got that right!

Looking forward to getting back in the water!

  14. I hope y'all have a great Bahamas trip. Wish I could go with you!

  15. Mike, just to confirm your choice in terms of availability before you leave, my dealer told me Sigma didn't ship on the promised date (11th). Sigma told him maybe by the end of may, they don't know - no delivery target yet!

Wish you a nice trip! :-)

  16. Thanks for the update Julian, I've got the Tokina and it appears to be quite nice. Build quality is very good -- if nothing else, it feels substantial! Ryan is sending me a zoom ring he thinks will come very close to fitting. It's always better to get stuff like this figured out before it's too late (I leave in three weeks for the Bahamas) . . . Sounds like Sigma is getting as good at releasing new lenses as Fuji is at releasing new DSLRs  .
