Electronic Monitor for still digital cameras

  1. To All Concerned:

I have seen a number of video camera housings that allow for external digital monitors and was wondering after having fallen in love with my old Nikon F4s camera in an aquatica housing with a DA 20 action finder that offered me large full frame viewing if there is a electronic monitor that will work with my Aquatica S2 or with my Aquatica 90 film housing. Both of these housings I own have tiny peep holes to compose through. This would give me the advantage of a large viewing area that I love about my F4s Housing. Composition becomes so much easier to achieve when your not squinting though a tiny optical finder in 54 degree water.

  2. Unfortunately the Video Out port on the DSLR's I'm familiar with only works in the Playback or Review mode not in the Image Capture or picture taking mode.

  3. I was on a 2-tank boat trip this past Saturday with a guy shooting a D70 in a Subal F100 film housing. He put a Light & Motion video monitor (like on the top of the video camera pictured here http://www.uwimaging.com/products/video_ho...00/monitors.htm ) on the top of the housing. He wired it through one of the stobe ports using a Sea&Sea synch cord connected to the video-out on the D70.

I did not ask which controls were accessable. He did say he needed to modify the base plate a bit to make the D70 fit in the F100 housing.

  4. The guy with the D70 couldn't use this to compose though, only to see what he had just shot AFAIK, since there is no way for the sensor to see what the lens is seeing while the mirror is down, or am I missing something here. I was under the impression that the question was about composing and I think the answer is mostly no, unless you built something like an angled finder with an integrated video output.

  5. Cool looking gizmo, i wonder if it's good enough to to see what's in focus.

It certainly won't fit in any standard housing... but maybe a housing manufacturer can change it's housing so it fits. Is anyone from Ikelite reading this ?

Yes I'm sure this D70 owner could not use the video screen to preview the image. I'm not even sure he could check the histogram post-view. I don't know what info is available when using the video-out on a D70. I just found it a resourceful way to avoid purchasing a new expensive housing.
