canon 1d mark ii and ettl-s adapter

  1. Anyone else thinking about giving the ettl2 adapter that was mentioned on the wetpixel entry page a try on a newer canon 1 series camera?

I e-mailed him and he said that it hadn't been tested and so wasn't supported. But if ettl-2 is pretty consistent across cameras, it might work.

Anyone have any other thoughts on that, reasons why it would or wouldn't work before I toss down a bunch of cash and start resoldering my strobe wiring in my housing?

  2. I too would like to try it. I would love to be able to shoot 2nd curtain sync.

Would you like to send Matthias your camera for testing? :-)

    Cheers

    Hey James...

Matthias is sending me one of the new units to try in the Mark II, with a tiny little hint that it might only require a small firmware change to make it work if it doesn't work out of the box. I've got Ikelite strobes (I'll try it with the DS-50s, which can do the double flash that ETTL requires, and I've also got a pair of 200s that I'll try it with), so I don't know if my results will translate to your rig.

I'll let you know what I find out, as I too would like that 2nd curtain sync, more so than TTL.

  4. Jon,

Thanks, I sure appreciate that! I also have a pair of DS125's as well as Inon Z220's so I should be able to do the preflashes too. Just the SS200's that won't work I guess.

How are you going to wire your adapter? Are you going to splice it into the hotshoe wiring? I would ask Matthias if he can make an adapter that goes hotshoe-circuitboard-yourhousinghotshoe. Does that make sense? THen you wouldn't have to do any wire cutting.

I would be delighted to help in this project. As y'all may or may not know I'm fairly familiar w/ TTL testing - I did the review of Ike's eTTL2 converter.

    Cheers

    James

  5. When the first Heinrichs E-TTL converter has been released for the 300D, Matthias was so kind to send me the converter for trying with my 10D. 300D and 10D are very similiar in terms of internal software and electronics (same exposure metering with 35 zones, same amount of AF points bound to the flash exposure, etc.). But it did not work and Matthias had to modify the converter firmware for every single camera body for being supported.

So E-TTL (II) across different cameras is only identical when using original Canon guns so far :-)

But maybe you are lucky and it works, you should try.

I would have preffered to turn on and off rear curtain sync as usual by the camera menu when I want to. As the 300D would be left out (no menu item for that) Matthias has related this feature to something else (always on or bound to shutter speed, or something like this).

If rear curtain is enabled all the time, would be interesting to know if this could have any potential influence on fast shutter speeds as I don't know if and how much the strobe output is delayed in conjunction with fast speeds. Does the camera take into account a basic flash duration from Canon land guns at certain power levels and starts strobing at the end of exposure accordingly? Or does the converter control this? I don't know. Somebody should try and write a review :-)

    regards,

    Julian

That's what it sounds like, yes, although the rear curtain sync should work with the SS200 - which is what I'm really interested in for those strobes anyhow.

He said that the one he was sending me I wouldn't have to cut any wires, and it would be fairly simple to test to see if it works. If it works at all (even just rear curtain) I'll probably see if he can make me an adapter like you mention above so that I can easily use the converter or not. If it does TTL as well as rear-curtain, then I might consider soldering it in place. I'm not scared of splicing and soldering...:)

As soon as I get the pieces here, I'll drop you a note, and maybe we could do a little joint review. I'm not totally up to speed on TTL - I do everything manually right now so having someone with some brains would help...:)

    Cheers.

  7. But it did not work and Matthias had to modify the converter firmware for every single camera body for being supported.

Hey Julian, he indicated that might be the case here as well. He is sending me one to try - but warned me that it might only work for rear curtain sync, or it might not work at all, or if the stars are all aligned, it might do TTL as well.

If rear curtain is enabled all the time, would be interesting to know if this could have any potential influence on fast shutter speeds as I don't know if and how much the strobe output is delayed in conjunction with fast speeds. regards,

I should get a unit to test in a week or so, and I'll try and write up what I find, if anything at all even works... :)

  8. Excellent.

  9. i'd be very interested in the results as well!!!!

thanks for testing that and keep us posted on the results. like james i'd be more interested in a solution that does not involve soldering and splicing :)

  10. Any update if the latest adapter works with the 1dm2? :)

  11. Any update if the latest adapter works with the 1dm2? :)

Not yet! Still waiting for the arrival of the adapter from Matthias. I am also leaving next week for a week or two of shooting in northern canada, so I might not get to it right away.

As soon as I get back, I'll have a crack at it and let you know!

  12. Any update if the latest adapter works with the 1dm2? :D

Okay, I got the adapter in the mail today. It's a small pcb a little smaller than the lcd you find on the back of a canon camera, with a bunch of wires coming off one side and a battery holder (CR2032) on the back, and a hotshoe adapter.

I took the hotshoe adapter, and plugged it into the hotshoe on the top of my 1d mark ii, and put the battery into the ettl converter. The little lightning bolt in the viewfinder came on, indicating that the camera thought that there was a flash attached. Yay!

I happened to have an extra bulkhead assembly lying around, so I twisted the wires from the adapter to the correct wires on the bulkhead, and plugged a sync cord and strobe into the bulkhead. This lets me test the setup without tearing into the housing strobe wiring (since I'm leaving on Friday for 4 days of shooting and don't want to F things up right before I leave).

I turned on the strobe and fired a couple shots, but the strobe didn't fire. The multmeter indicated that I had solid connections from adapter to strobe, but it just wouldn't fire.

I am in the middle of troubleshooting it with Matthias, and just wanted to give you a quick update before I leave town again. I'll post again when I know more. Matthias seemed to think that the fact that the camera thought it had a strobe attached was a good sign...:D

More posted when I know more!

  13. I wasn't able to get the adapter to work. Mattias is going to try and get a 1d on his bench and try and figure it out, but out of the box it doesn't seem to work.

Sorry for the quick note, but I'm on my way out the door and wanted to post this before I left.

I'll let you know if anything changes! (all 3 of you who are interested...:D)

  14. James should plug the hot shoe connector from his wife's housing into the 1DmkII camera and see if strobes work with Ikelite conversion circuitry............

  15. Housing was received today. I'll give it a try and post results on Mon or Tuesday as I'm going diving this weekend.

  16. I know this thread is a bit old but any updates on using the adapter with the 1d M2?

  17. I tried the Ike eTTL2 converter from Sarah's 20D housing with my 1DmkII and it did not function right off the bad. Probably needs some electronic tweaking.

    Cheers
