Tamron SP 11-18mm

  1. Thanks guys!

13-18mm isn't bad as on the 1DmkII that would be equal to about 16-22mm

A lens that's sharp, has little CA and will work on both a 1.6x and a 1.3x camera sounds good to me.

Now, the Tokina, the Sigma, or the Tamron...that is the question.

Well I'd stick with the Sigma 12-24. No vignetting on the 1D2 and distortion is minimal compared to the 11-18. Also the best range. Only thing is the flare issue.

  3. .S. Got an interesting phone call this morning from a wetpixeller re: that other wonder of German photographic engineering, the EWA-marine plastic bag. Seems the 1DsMk2 (!) doesn't allow proper function of a macro lens due to insufficient clearance between camera and the optical port up front. If my Queensland colleague's reading this, she may wish to post her problem online as I have full faith in Jolly and James' ability to engineer a solution.

I am the shy Queensland wetpixel lurker, so thanks Rob for drawing me into the deep end here. This is probably not the thread to post this, but since Whitey mentioned me here, this is where i will reply.

Thanks James for the offer to assist. I am a photographic artist with a passion for the water and ocean but only the top 3 metres :) I have a 1dsmk2 and was hoping to use the Ewa bag since i wasn't requiring it to perform to depths... but I think it has been a blessing that I was having trouble with the fit with my 1dsmk2 and macro because I am quite terrified of immersing my camera in a plastic bag :D ...so I am thinking the better solution would be a housing. Now to just wrap my head around purchasing one! :D .... whilst looking at my undunked EWA U-AXP.

It will help if you tell us which lens you want to use. I believe the UAXP allows only internal focusing lenses.

  5. Yes, thanks scubadru. I foolishly made an error in my calculations. It clearly states 170mm from the back of the camera to the front of the lens and i am embarrassed to say that when i measured i forgot to remember that my Tamron 90 f 2,8 macro was not an internal focus. Regardless of that, I couldnt get the little black spacers which were provided, to work in any combination to reach to the full length of the lens extension even to accommodate a 50mm. Because of the depth of the battery in 1dsmk2, there needs to be another screw and nut provided i think. I have contacted the rep, who will be back in OZ in mid August, but i've decided to go a Seacam housing anyway and make more excuses to get to the water to justify its' purchase :)

  6. @James,

here is a Sigma 10-20mm review showing examples in conjunction with a 1D:

They state it's "usable" from 11mm upwards. However, your MkII sensor is slightly bigger as far as I know. But with a little luck ...
