Just got back from Lembeh with D2X

  1. I just spent 4 days in Lembeh and 1 day in Bunaken on a liveaboard, the Panunee.

Did a total of 17 dives (would have been 18 dives but terminated one as my Subal flood alarm went off as I just descended on one dive, luckily it was false alarm as there was no water in there, not sure but somehow the sensor got a bit of moisture on it). Anyhow, I will be back in Lembeh again for 2 weeks in September.

Here are a few pictures from the trip and there are quite a few more on my website. Any comment would be welcome. All the macro shots were taken with 70-180mm with 6T Nikon diopter. The one wide angle shot was taken with 10.5mm.

  2. Some tremendous shats there. Really love the white frog fish. Is it free swimming? Total black background really sets that shot off.

My moisture alarm also went on and has not re-set itself so I've got a new one on order. It seems very sensitive to even the slightest dot of water. I'd pulled the back off mine in Lembeh just before a dive to take a topside shot and the alarm started blinking during the dive. Came up to find just a spot of moisture between the sensors. Tasted it and it was fresh water. Obviously condensation formed from taking the back off in that humidity.

    Again, great shots.

Thanks for the compliment. The white frogfish was kind of gliding rather than swimming. Probably got sick and tired of so many photographers taken his picture so he tried to get away. Sometimes it is nice to be last in line for a picture :D

My moisture sensor would not go off either even after I wiped down the sensor with dry cloth. Eventually I just blasted it with compressed air and that took care of the problem. The problem did not recurred luckily otherwise I think I would get a heart attack if the alarm go off underwater again.

  5. Thanks for sharing. You have some outstanding images on your website. Very nice lighting and composition.

  6. Well, i got the first two shots before the server timed out...love that first one of the baby clown! Great expression. You were using a +6? the +4 with the +2 screwed on top? Surprised you were able to get the fish and the branch of the anemone in focus, nicely done.

Also really like the look down the throat of the eel, cool!

So how did you like the rig? Getting used to it now?

  7. Mike, I am not sure what the 6T Nikon diopter is exactly but my impression is that it is probably a 4+ diopter, 5T is 2+, I think.

I used 5T a lot in the past but thought for Lembeh, a 6T might be better.

Of course I also happened to see a pod of dolphins and a flying gunard that was a good 1.5 ft in diameter so all I could do was watching them swam by.

The biggest Nexus wetmount diopter won't fit on my Subal port so I am now thinking about the macromate but I am a bit cash deficient right now.

I really started to get comfortable with the setup now and don't have any problem using the GS Viewfinder now so everything is great :D

  8. the baby clown is just too too cute.  they are all beautiful images!

    adorama: 62mm Close-up Lens #6T  3x Diopter.

    B&H: 2.9x

Do you know whether the 6T a single or multiple element? is the

lense held in place by a split ring or a threaded retainer ring?

How is the CA? I've found LCDs monitors to make a good test

image -- close enough to resolve the red green and blue.

once a gain, really gorgeous images!  rich colors, beutiful sense

of space, and the nonstandard compositions are terrific.

I did a bit of looking around. 5T is +1.5 diopter and 6T is +2.9

Both are 2 elements. Both are threaded and you just screw them on

in front of the lens just like most other filters.

  9. The Nikon 5T and 6T diopters are achromat - some of the finest made.

    Cheers
