  1. I find you can white balance of anything and it is OK - apart from a scene of predominantly blue water. Your hand, the sand, some rock, some coral, some amphoras. Just make sure that your hand (or whatever) fills most of the frame - and that it is illumated by the ambient light and not in the shade of the port.

Basically you can use any neutrally coloured subject because the filtering effect of sea water is so strong.

The time you will struggle to find a subject for WB is when you are freediving out in the blue. This is when you may still want to use the grey card.

  2. Hi!

Do you know where to find help (links and so on) on using grey card UW?

    Thanks

  3. So trying to get ready for the upcoming trip to Guadalupe. Going to try shooting natural light, hopefully with the new Magic Filter.

Understand shoot with the light coming from behind

Understand shoot down on the subject/s

But, what if you do not have control over this? Like your in a shark cage tied to a boat and it swings you around so you are “facing†into the sun?

The dumb question. With a D100 could someone walk me through how to set Calibrate/Manually Set the WB. The book says turn Shooting Mode Dial to WB, then turn the WB to PRE, ok I did that BUT THEN WHAT????

Worst case scenario if I can’t manually set/calibrate the WB what should I do? Assume again natural light, hopefully with the new Magic Filter, 10-15fsw depth, +40ft viz, blue water.

  4. USE RAW & AUTO white Balance

If you have not control off the situation thats is the best way

Use Aperature priority and just take you photos.

Later with ACR you fix everything.

If you have the time & you have contitions that are for this use

Manual White Balance. If not use Auto.

You photos will be just fine..

  5. Thank you motionsync.

It was good information. I'll order one soon and be expecting to try it underwater on macro.
