Question for D70 users

  1. Well, i hit 10000 images today on the camera. I have always left it at the default, DSC_001 etc for file names. Once it hit 10 000 it started back at DSC_001 again. Therefore, i now have a problem in the fact that i now have the same file names on my hard drive... :)

I tried going to a new folder but it again just gave me DSC_etc but under a new folder...

Anyone know if it is possible to change the DSC prefix? And of course...how?

Failing that, what is a good way of batch renaming files sequentially?

    Thanks

    Mike

  2. Maybe not quite the answer you are looking for Mike, but how about using the computer to change them?

Not sure what OS you are using, but it is very easy to batch process name changes with Apple's Automator or Irfanview on PC. To my knowledge there is no way to change the camera's default DSC_ naming prefix (although apparently the D2X allows this)...

  3. Ahh, just checked Irfanview. Unless your images are already TIFs or JPEGs, you can't use the batch rename function. Someone with more windoze knoweldge than me may need to offer advice...

    Sorry Mike.

  4. Thanks Anthony,

Just found a solution, a friend mentioned a program called Nikon Picture Project which does it. With many a look through lots of crap i have found it...

    Problem solved i hope..

    Mike

  5. Of course. Hadn't really considered that POS to be much chop at all, but if it does the trick - that is excellent news!

  6. Ok, so now i have a new problem....

A magazine wants a bunch of pics sorted by location, i wanted to just give appropriate folders but they want the name of the location in file name of each photo......

So, this Picture Project only does it when transferring from camera....

I thought of trying to create a batch in PS but it will just rename every file the same and overwrite i am sure....

    Ideas?

Guess i should move this to the other forum....

  7. It's easy to do in irfanview.

Put all the files you want to rename in a folder

Open up one of them in irfanview

    click File -> batch conversion/rename

in the dialog box select "Add all" (make sure files of type is set correctly)

    select output directory

    check the "Batch rename" box

in the Name Pattern box put in location_$F where location is the name of your location, the $F is the program's code for your original name.

    click start

  9. Thanks Herb...But...Is it free and can i down load it?  I am in Yap you know....

It's free. There may be a special manta tax. :)

  10. On a PC it is easy to rename files from the command prompt. The following command will append "Yap_" to every file in a directory:

    ren *.* Yap_*.*

This would change a file named dsc_001.jpg to Yap_dsc_001.jpg.

If you're not at all familiar with the command prompt, you will want to know the command "cd" to change directories.

cd "c:\My Pictures" will change to the "My Pictures" directory.

No need to download an app, this is built into Windows.

  11. It is amazing how often remembering dos commands come in handy.

  12. Cool!

Thanks Lute, i will give that a shot

    Mike

  13. just good practice when trying something out new (especially console commands): make sure you try it on some dummy data to understand what you're doing. Sucks when you jump the gun and copy/paste some goofy thing you found on google only to botch your data up. Not that its happened to me of course... ahem.

of course in this case, the commands are just what you need and work like a charm. but its still a good idea.

  14. Mike,

If you can't be bothered with the command prompt and DOS commands or need more flexibility, you should try Oscar's Renamer at:

    http://mediachance.com/free/renamer.htm

It's free, fast, easy to use, and works with any kinds of files (I think Irfanview only works with pictures, but I may be wrong). I personally use it and am very pleased with it. Just remember to press the "OK" button on the top right hand side to effect the changes.

    Cheers,

    Mat
