  1. Linear FOV probably is a crop. But the resolution of the crop is 5.3k, so I don't think it's an issue at all. Cropping every video to get narrower field of view is not of interest to me honestly. I have more than 1,000 gopro videos just from the Hero11, so that would be a huge time spend.
  2. My GoPro is great and it’s difficult to differentiate vs my Sony A7S3 with WWL1 in shallow well lit conditions. Usually the GoPro footage (in 60p) is slightly better in shallow water because of the vastly superior stabilization. In 120p the Sony is waaaay better. As far as FOV, linear is definitely not too narrow in my opinion. I agree completely.
  3. In the spirit of growing the new forum, here are my preferred GoPro 11 settings that I use 99% of the time. By no means do you need to follow these, but I think it's a great starting point at the very least. 5.3K | 60fps | FOV: Linear | Hypersmooth: On | 10-bit | Bit Rate: High | WB: Auto | Sharpness: Medium | Color: Natural | QuikCapture: On | Screensavers: Never | Beeps: off | Auto cloud upload : On | Auto clear SD card after upload: On Here's where the GoPro excels in my opinion: Stabilization: It's vastly superior to my Sony A7S3 and Olympus EM1-mk3. App/Cloud/Sharing: Unmatched! The auto upload and erase memory card is so nice, unlimited cloud storage with subscription and discounts on GoPro products. The ultimate setup for sharing videos with my clients with basically zero effort on my end. Handling: Obviously the GoPro is super tiny and you can extend it far from your body easily with a extendable stick. I take it on almost every dive. QuickCapture: One button press to turn on camera and begin recording, one more button press to end recording and turn off. (one battery lasts me 3 dives in a day). Shallow water, snorkeling & rough conditions: I only film with natural light with my GoPro and it's really difficult to beat in 8 meters or shallower. Price: Cheap for what you get. Where the GoPro struggles in my opinion: White balance: I really dislike Auto WB on this camera, but I can't find a way to adjust this setting underwater (help me if you have a solution!). Deep water (without lights) Obvious!: All cameras struggle in this scenario, obviously one with a tiny sensor would not excel in high iso situations. Example clips from various depths with the settings above (only natural light): Shallow water with Cormorant & sardines (Pelican Rock in Cabo San Lucas): https://gopro.com/v/EBOG7ELyd2n6O Around 20ft depth with sea lions (Lands End in Cabo San Lucas), listen for the sea lion underwater bark!: https://gopro.com/v/rd170WNkq5q24 Around 30ft depth with school of Porkfish with cheap red clip-on filter (Blow Hole in Cabo San Lucas): https://gopro.com/v/oK5D0qD90b41V 110ft depth at Gordo Banks using a cheap red clip-on filter (offshore near San Jose Del Cabo): https://gopro.com/v/V6JodKPRldkNR
  4. Oh, ya I already have one of those in the photo on my Joby tripod. I just don't usually remove the ball head. But in salt water I will remove the ball head like you said.
  5. Oh I see. I have only used mine in the pool, so that's good to know. there are probably some steel parts or springs in the ball head.
  6. I watched it with my eyes closed because I know I can't afford it! ;)
  7. This one is the aluminum "5K", and it's really good. I had the plastic one and broke it the second time I used it. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1359596-REG/joby_jb01508_gorillapod_5k_kit.html?gad_source=1
  8. I have more than 300 dives on my hero 11 and I love it. Over the years I've had the Hero 2, 5, 7, 9, and now 11. In my experience the 10,11,12 are all exceptional. biggest upgrades vs the 5 mentioned in previous comments is stabilization, and frame rates. I also think the Auto WB on my Hero 11 is decent most of the time. I wish I could manual WB underwater but I haven't found a way yet. Here are my favorite settings: 5.3K | 60fps | FOV: Linear | Hypersmooth: on | 10-bit | Bit Rate: High | WB: Auto | Sharpness: Medium | Color: Natural | QuikCapture: on | Screensavers: Never | Beeps: off | Auto cloud upload : On | Auto clear SD card after upload : On
  9. The front lens is just a flat piece of glass and it's replaceable, so I wouldn't worry about that. But I really like the dive housing, make sure to buy the official GoPro brand and not a knockoff chinese one. Several friends here in Mexico did that and flooded theirs. Also if you join GoPro subscription you get better prices directly on GoPro website than I could find at B&H or my normal buying spots. And the subscription is so good with unlimited storage and only $25 for the first year. After owning the Hero11 for exactly one year I have 1200+ videos on my GoPro cloud and hundreds of dives on with zero issues. It's a great camera.
  10. Hi all Looking for fellow divers and tank fills around Mendocino County. I will be living in Ukiah, and from my searching it seems that the only nearby dive shop (in Ukiah) has closed. I need to find a way to fill tanks, closest I have found is Santa Rosa. I would like to dive around Mendocino with anyone that will do it with me! If Santa Rosa is truly my nearest tank fill I will need to buy a bunch of tanks or buy my own compressor. Ideas are welcome Cheers Riley
  11. I use the hero 11 basically on every dive except when teaching and I love it. I find it very hard to beat in less than 6 meters of water, even my A7S3 is struggling to beat it for wide angle in shallow water. The stabilization is sooo good on the Hero11 and I use a selfie stick (from amazon) that I can extend to about 1.5m which is really nice to get the camera closer to eagle rays or other timid animals that are scared of you. I use the GoPro brand dive housing and it's perfect. One major and often overlooked benefit of GoPro is their app and cloud storage. I have my camera set up so that when I get home from diving I just plug it in to charge and it automatically uploads all footage to the cloud and formats my SD card. Effortless and really useful when you dive daily. I only need one battery, and the one button function to turn camera on and record is so good. then one button press and the camera is off again. Love it. Another benefit of the GoPro cloud is sharing, I just create a link for downloading the footage on the GoPro app and send to my clients. They love it and they always have the footage the same day of diving with basically zero effort from me. To prevent loosing it I use this Gear Keeper retractor thing, Whenever I'm using the GoPro I unclip it, then when I'm done I reclip it. I don't like using it while on the tether because it's too short and limits movement, not perfect but it works. My favorite settings for 99% of diving is: 5.3K | 60fps | FOV: Linear | Hypersmooth: on | 10-bit | Bit Rate: High | WB: Auto | Sharpness: Medium | Color: Natural | QuikCapture: on | Screensavers: Never | Beeps: off | Auto cloud upload : On | Auto clear SD card after upload: on | All of underwater portions of this YouTube short was filmed with Hero 11 with the settings shown above. This is the Joby pro (aluminum) tripod and I really like it for the GoPro. It's also sturdy enough to use with my Sony cameras topside. A neoprene protector is good if you dive a lot.
  12. Great images and it makes me wonder what that lens can do in video!
  13. Hey Mike, I'm guessing you're going to Revillagigedo Islands (Socorro)? I have several friends that work on those boats. From what I hear it's one of the best locations in the world for large pelagic species. Thanks for the welcome Tim!
  14. Hi all! New member here, coming over from wetpixel. I've been a diver for 13 years or so and am currently a padi open water instructor living in Cabo San Lucas. My favorite diving has been in the Philippines, Magdalena Bay, Cabo Pulmo, various sites around Cabo, and Bonne Terre Mine in Missouri. In the future my goal is to make it to Socorro Island, Raja, and Tubbataha reef. I vastly prefer video over photo, and I shoot a Sony A7S3 with the WWL1 and I have recently added the 90mm macro. I also use the GoPro Hero 11 and absolutely love it because I can take it on almost every dive I do and the stabilization is very good.
