Sony A7rV Autofocus Problem
it happens in different cases, one is when I move the camera a little bit to have the subject more left or right for example. The other case is, when the subject is moving and I try to follow. This is also on land with the camera fixed on a table and moving the object a little bit.

Sony A7rV Autofocus Problem
Hi, thanks for your clarification, and the case is, that someone from Sony confirms that this is a problem (here in Vienna in a Sony authorized shop during the presentation of the A7V. I will try out now what you described.

Sony A7rV Autofocus Problem
I have it with the 100mm Sony macro (and other lenses like 70-200 f4 macro) on my A7RV. It is very easy to reproduce.

A1 II or A7v as a video camera
Wow, many thanks for your detailed answer. It helps a lot! Please see also my comment in the A7RV firmware topic (about my focus problem). Since I'm also doing wildlife/birds I would like to have more speed. And as a next challenge doing more videos, that's the reason behind.

Sony A7rV Autofocus Problem
Hi Davide, many thanks for your interest! Yes it's only with stills. Before a few weeks I posted about it, using cont. autofocus without AI object detection doesn't work precise enough for macro work, on land or underwater makes no difference. And its also not about too less focus light or bad autofocus conditions. I try to explain, please excuse my English but I'm no native speaker :-) : Please see picture one, this is my motive, setting the focus point (small) to the red mark, which I want to focus on, second picture is where my focus ends up in blue, when I move my camera while focusing. The pictures are only for illustrating what I mean. In reality the output is, that for example the eyes are not sharp. This happens not with A1, A1 II, A7V, but with A9 III it's the same problem. I already talk with Sony about it, they had the explanation that the sensor of the A7R5 is too slow, hmmmm, but that can't be the case for the A9III, we tried it in a shop together with a Sony guy and with different cameras, Canon R5 was the best result :-( . Would be really interested how your thoughts are! I have the A7R5 from beginning on and I think at the beginning this was not the case, it worked much better and I had better results.

A1 II or A7v as a video camera
Hi, I'm doing mostly macro stuff. Until now only stills. Now I want to change my camera (A7Rv) more in direction to video. I'm also not happy with the autofocus of my A7RV on land and underwater. But I would need a good underwater macro still function too. As I had recently bought the Sony 100 mm macro (and have other lenses for land, as special wildlife) I want to stay with Sony. Do you think A7v would be better for video as the A1 II? I would immediately decide for A7v because of price, battery, new sensor ..., but for cropping A1 II would be better and I use cropping also on land a lot for macro. Would be happy for some thoughts about it. Thanks! LG Susanne

Sony A7rV Autofocus Problem
no, unfortunately not, autofocus, as special cont autofocus is still very unsatisfying for me (macro use). What is new is, that you can create your own customized focus points

time to update from Canon 7dmkii
I do not know how fast you will have to change, but Canon R6 II is a very good camera ( I know it from a friend, underwater and above water) and there is a new version of this camera in the startup line of Canon, announced with more megapixel. That could be a good choice, including good video features announced.

Macro gear with near unlimited budget
yes i did a reset, several times and I tried a lot of changes of the settings. Unfortunately I did not have a second A7r5 to compare. Now I gave the camera back to the dealer. I'm thinking to buy the A1 ii, because all of my surrounding staff is Sony. But also thinking about Canon. Therefore my original question. My biggest interest is macro/supermacro.

Macro gear with near unlimited budget
its exactly described here, what I wanted to use, I believe more and more that my camera has a problem...

Macro gear with near unlimited budget
thanks for that descriptions, the only thing is that I 'm not using object tracking, its off! I used only cont autofocus, tried it with a stativ and a not moving subject which is easy to focus (good contrast and light). And yet the frame does not match the focus point. Roughly it looks like the picture I have attached. (Sorry for the primitive drawing, but I gave my A7R5 back to my dealer yesterday, looking for a new system now). It's not always the same result, but I got deviations with every new focussing even though camera and subject are fixed. Underwater it made live really hard.

Macro gear with near unlimited budget
It's not only underwater, its also when I work with a stativ on land (A7R5). I set the Focus point on a not moving object with cont autofocus, and get a larger frame around but not exactly where my focus point is, even when it is something like a intersection of a cross, which is easy to focus. I'm sure this was not the case when I started with the camera in 2023. The example is a 0,5 cm fruitfly, with the focus (hand hold) direct on the eye. I dont know if its depending on the focus point, but the continious autofocus is not aligned with my focus point.

Macro gear with near unlimited budget
My friend has a Canon R5 and he can choose a significant smaller autofocuspoint. I put an example (land) from my A7R5 here: this is cropped by around 200 %. Its not really sharp, the conditions were perfect, its 1/250 F16. Object is 1 cm. Problem is, I can focus the front of the insect, but not the eye. Underwater its the same. The second picture is with Nauticam SMC3, cropped 300 % for demo, focus on the front of the nudi is hardly possible but not on the "horn, (rinophore?)" as you can see. So as a result I'm not sure if I should change the setup. Supermacro is my really passion.

Macro gear with near unlimited budget
Hi, thanks for your comment, I have actual the A7r5 with the sony 90mm setup in an Isotta housing. But since one of the firmware updates the Small Focus point is not really working for me, almost never hit the exact point. I use cont autofocus with tracking, but tried also Manual. Last trip to Anilao I had somehow 70 % not in focus, comparing with other trips a really bad result. For Supermacro the focus point seems to "big" for me. I tried it also on land with the same result.

Macro gear with near unlimited budget
so, let us assume 25000 Euro. Including also something like viewfinder, monitor etc... Wishlist is Macro, Supermacro still and video. Questions I ask myself, like the best macro lense, same setup for still and video, for example viewfinder or monitor, Sony: really the 90 mm which is so hard to focus ...
