My new DS-125 doesn't sync correctly, or does it?!

  1. Original question was pertaining to Olympus C7070 camera. Following explanation is from our knowledgeable types:

    That is a C7070 glitch that we talked about before. The 7070 will do the exact same thing with the Olympus land flash units. The solution is to open up the aperture until his pictures are not dark any more.

    The reason his system did not do it as much on land is because he was not out of range of the flash as often in the room he tested in. Once he takes the system underwater, the point of underexposure is more easily reached due to the attenuation of light by seawater.

    The 7070 will not slightly underexpose any images, they will be either correct or severely underexposed. Once you get beyond the range of the flash, the camera sends data to shut the flash off very quickly.

  2. I think that there may be more to it than discussed sofar.

    I was diving the last 2 weekends (and previously on a trip to the Red Sea in September) and experienced the exact same thing.

    Setup = D70 + Ike Itil housing + DS50 strobe.

    Yes, I have the correct sync cord, yes, the switch on the Itil circuitery is set to DS50.

    It seems to make no difference what kind of mode you're shooting in, it happened in A, S, P and Auto modes.

    It is intermittent, powercycling both camera and strobe usually solves it, but it may come back during the dive.

    I have tried "wiggling" the synccord at the connectors, but this made no change.

    I suspected battery power might have something to do with it, but it also happened with fresh (alkaline, not rechargable) batteries.

    We know from Warren's post that the DS125 has the same problem, so it does not look like it's strobe related (unless the DS50 and DS125 use identical/similar firmware/circuitery)

    I've just done a quick check of the EXIF data of 4 pics, and I find that the pics that have flashed but are underexposed have all been exposed at 1/125th second.

    The ones that are exposed correctly are all at 1/60th second.

    I'll look into a bit more later, but unfortunately, I have some work to do now as my trainees are eagerly awaiting my arrival or so I prefer to think :D
