OK - that makes sense - I would be fascinated to find out what percentage of the time vid guys here skip WB on purpose. Seems like most conversations on this topic are centered on how to WB better, not if and when...cool stuff.
Thanks!
Excuse me? None of my cars have a gas guzzler tax. And my EV1 guzzles no gas at all. ok it eats up batteries every 10-15 years but the new NiMH pack well environmentally vs LiON. Your diesel taxi jogs on the other hand... tsk tsk. Why are you even breathing air in Singapore? Isn't the air brown now?
Unfortunately i don't have the capacity to edit in uncompressed, nor the software, time and skill to "paint in colors:(. As such, i save a ton of time using good WB techniques. Furthermore, it is easier for me to throw out some content because it doesn't match and I can't/don't want to key frame...than it is for me to correct every shot in post. Perhaps when i have an editing guru as a partner ready to go, i'll be more flexible.

Drew you just keep amazing me with your knowledge....probably why I hang out here so much and the fact that computer is right next to me why I work....
I'll post a couple good example m2t files soon of CC done in EDIUS. It's very easy and realtime. Then you can just copy the filter and dump it to any or multiple clips instantly. It's certainly better than Premiere and I'm enjoying using it to cut up our Ningaloo DVD.
What's that new NLE you're using called again Wagsy?
I'm a bit puzzled about this. Are the "elite" really shooting with fixed "daylight" white balance? If I do that the footage below a few metres ends up a horrible washed out greeny-blue. Far too monochrome to do anything with in post. How about CC filters Drew, do the big boys use them?
When I got my first whale shark at Richelieu Rock I must have white balanced at least 25 times in 25 minutes, no exaggeration.
Nick,
What you may also be forgetting is that the top few selected production and post houses are equipped with some incredibly serious color correcting suites. Costing hundreds of thousands of dollars our systems pale in comparison. I was working here with some peeps from LA and they mentioned a suite they used on a daily hire process for their productions. The suite itself is worth something like $600,000.......how many Mac G5's would that buy? I can't for the life of me remember the name of that system but its a serious piece of kit.
Mark.
Are we still all going on about CC.
Nick the that program I use is called....bugger cannot remember..
Well it looks like Canopus Japan themselves are interested in contacting me now.

Nick, think about it. What's harder to fix in post? The color cast or multiple white points? It's much easier to match scenes in cyan/blue.
As for the "big boys", a lot of their post coloring is done on Quantel Pablo IQs. I've seen them shoot color bar slates for gamma testing but haven't seen many filters on F750 or 900s. For them I think it's more to get the shot without fiddling too much on settings, including WB. It really depends on what type of shot it is etc. There is no hard and fast rule of shooting. Color filters are another element to thin about and the 2 stop light drop is sometimes not good.
As a counter point, i have watch some top notch professional productions in HD that have used underwater WB. I must say they are stunning. I think in the past it has been hard to get good WB because it requires an exceptional shooter when conditions are dynamic. However, if it can be done, the spoils go to the victor. I have watched many other "professional" productions that didn't use UW WB and I must say it is obvious. I suppose there edit boys, even with the fancy systems, couldnt' get the job done in post:) Anyway, for most folks on this forum, we don't have 10 post boys with 600K systems. As such, we must rely on more skill in capturing the source video and take more chances with the WB.
