The reviews on the D300 look very good and will make a good underwater camera, does anybody have an idea whether it might fit the Subal D200 housing.?

Hi Bill, welcome to wetpixel!
I don't think there is a final answer for your question yet simply because the D300 is not available yet. I think it is possible, but not without modification of the D200 housing. Take a look at this topic where the subject is discussed in detail:
Can we revive this thread yet with any new info?
I already have 2 x D200 bodies and a Subal ND20 housing and just ordered a D300 to replace one of 200's.
If it won't fit in the ND20 I won't be heartbroken but from the images I saw B. White took of the sailfish and everthing I've read...it sure looks like a nice lil upgrade. I called the shop where I bought my whole Subal rig and asked if they knew if the 300 would fit in the 200 housing and the answer I got was "I don't know". Now I've used this shop alot in the past 2 years and must be pushing the 10k mark in money I've spent with them. They have always been the best in customer service and go beyond what I expect from retail. I'm just gonna chalk this flippant answer up to somebody have a crappy Monday. I hope you guys can fill me in a bit more. A new backplate & tray would make my day ![]()

Hi John,
We tried putting a pre-production D300 camera in various housings back in October, and the bad news is that most of the controls are just enough off on the front to make it not doable. Also, none of the housing makers are offering a backplate only option.
Here's what we found when we tried to shoehorn the D300 into various housings:
Titan housing
The guide pin on the tray & the hole on the camera do not line up. The camera sits crooked on the tray and goes into the housing pointing to the right. The video out cable on the tray is too short to hook into the camera. The Qual. & WB controls hit the knob on the housing top. All other buttons on the back seem to line up. None of this really matters since L&M don't have anything in the works for a D300 anyway.
Aquatica housing
The tray will not go in and lock because the camera flash hits the housing. The C,S,M switch on the housing is too long and hits the camera body. The camera “fits†on the tray but will not slide into the housing. The mode lever does not line up, power on/off lever does not line up. All vertical buttons on the back left do not line up with the housing back.
Seatool
Camera will not even fit into the housing. The upper left side of the camera hits against the housing.
Sea & Sea housing
The tray will not fit at all, the camera is larger than the tray is now. Camera without tray fits inside housing, most controls do not line up.
Ikelite housing
Tray screw does not line up with camera hole, guide pins do not allow camera to sit on tray at all. All controls on the top line up, but not on the back. Playback, trash all line up, but protect, menu, enter, etc… do not, they sit off to the left. All controls on right side of camera back do not line up.
Subal housing
The camera sits on the tray, but the metal tab on the tray points the camera upwards. It goes into the housing with the lens pointing up. On the back only the lower 4 buttons on the left line up, no other buttons line up. C,S,M & lens release buttons line up when the tray is not used. Mode button needs to come back on a new housing. On/off do not line up. Shutter release hits the camera body without functioning. WB, ISO do not line up properly.
Good info Jim,
If you check out "Pakman's" modification he was able to use the D300 in the D200 Sea and Sea housing by making a new tray and offset "button pushers"
I'm betting the same can be done w/ the Subal housing.

I actually need to correct myself. It seems as though Aquatica are in the works of having a D200 to D300 upgrade path. A few of the front controls will need to be modified, a new tray, and a new back. No word on price or schedule yet.
thanks for the fast reply....sounds like I need to call Macgyver or I need to order a new housing ![]()

you mean Sam's modification but he had to get a new tray machined ![]()

And didn't Jean from Aquatica post awhile back that the D300 did fit the front but would require a new back?
Thanks for the correction - I meant Sam's sea and sea
Cheers

James,
It's Nexus I've done....and am looking at Subal now too.

I just talked to Jean yesterday and he said there are some slight modifications needed to the front half. These parts and the rear plate would be included in the kit and can be installed by the owner.
Besides Aquatica, I don't know of anyone else offering a factory upgrade.
Kudos to Aquatica.
Hey Felix, i'll see you in Caracas soon (May). Ciao Chamo.
Hi Jean,
Let me know, I have the "polarcitas" already on the freezer... ![]()
