For those of us in the real world
and can't afford the RED (£10,000+ then the same for a housing and thats the basic) the slagged off HMW EX1 (remember the A1) is getting some rave reviews and flying off the shelves..
Check out Phillip Blooms website especially 'Kew Gardens in winter' using this cam and a letus extreme 35mm adapter (around £600) all i can say is ...WOW !!!!

But for those of you with money to burn...lucky you...

Back on track with the RED production. How many companies you know of hit a glitch in production, call back all cameras, renew them, send out fixed cameras, get all remaining cams up to spec and restart production? All the while the owner of the company is chatting with people, answering questions on a public forum? Pretty amazing really.
I have a RED shoot already booked in April with someone coming out here with two units. Two cam shoot so either mine of their backup. Looking good.
Cheers,
Mark.
No money to burn, to invest in my career maybe but not to burn.
Well thats lucky then... its good to have the back up...
But its still bloody expensive for a high resolution thats way beyond our broadcastability for another few years...i know, i know compression...blah, blah...still think if it was such a miracle it would have a 2 year + waiting list...but i'm hoping your right and all goes your way...just not my investment...Whats Scarlet..a baby red...whens NAB 2008
And you have money to burn....Ha,ha,ha....

I think one of my buddies just shot with the Red in Kuwait last week, He wasn't DPing, he's the Post Super but he was working very close with the DP so I'll find out what he got from the experience. Personally I'm a skeptic and a film snob so if you put a Panavision Platinum and a Red in front of me, I doubt I'll even notice the Red.

Scarlet hype aside, XDCAM and even HDV should still have a place in the market. The broadcast market can't handle another format.
The RED is a nice product that fits a niche market that requires low cost production for 4k resolution. It's accelerated the small production companies and made small projects possible for big companies. It has changed the 40K market for sure. But the HDCAM R has dropped in price and will drop some more.
Still the under $10k market is still very much the domain of Sony, canon and Panasonic. Will be interesting to see how this develops.
I would imagine that the broadcast world could very well handle another format if it offers less compression and better image quality than any HDV offering. Stands to reason. I think possibly that Scarlet will turn some of the above words into a convenient little menu.......get ready to eat them.
RED is being shot all over at the moment, including underwater so the dream is becoming a reality. I remember the nay sayers.
Counting the days.
Well Mark, as one of the 'nay sayers' who complained they didn't have a working prototype before showing demo reels, I still stand by what I said. I've seen and played with #XX and it's a nice camera. I've also seen a feature made from Red and it looks good.
It's still a $40k+ system, whereas the XDCAM HD systems are under $20k. It's about market segments. Scarlet may or may not change that.
Then you have to consider that DNX is still developing and editing powerhouse Avid has only begun to support it through a converter. Apple scored a coup with FCP being a developer but for many with Avid workstations I don't see them switching to FCP just because of a new camera just yet. Maybe when it's upgrade time. There are of course ways to deal with Red files through Avid but the process , if conveyed correctly to me, is not worth the hassle or time. Early adopters had to work within the limitations of a new format. With the electronic age, I think we'll see new formats pop up more often because of the decoding abilities of processors. Problem is we now have to upgrade every other year as it is.
The RED is going to be a huge housing so that also means one would be limited in the shots one can get compared to shooting on a much smaller XDCAM EX sized housing.
I achieved much more interesting angles/shots than the guy did with his full sized HDCAM setup with my Phenom plus his setup was a pig to get in and out of the water with.
Lets face it RED and XDCAM EX are in different leagues. RED will be awesome but it is expensive, I agree that it is cheap for what it is but it still will be a $40K system + imagine the excess baggage when zipping over to Indo for a quick shoot.. the ongoing costs will be big. Reckon it's for people with industry dollars behind them or deep pockets.

Once over 30 kilos it's like $24 per kilo excess. Poor guys I just put on a plan had 300 kg... ![]()
Another thing is the budgets are getting smaller and smaller from the networks so why pay someone $200,000 for a shoot when they can get it for a quarter of that on smaller units. If it's for TV it gets compressed anyhow like digital HD TV gets beamed out as 18mbps MPEG2. I certainly was not impressed watching digital TV signals on a 52 inch 1920/1080res LCD...it had MPEG blockyness all over the place.
So I think the RED is for a minor few while the rest of us will be happy with the smaller units. I could not picture myself free diving under a Whale Shark with a housed RED. ![]()
To clarify I am not talking about RED, that is a different camera altogether. Wait for NAB 2008.

You seems to know things that us don't. Can you tell us more? This could help many of us to wait a bit more before investing big bucks...
Thanks
Pierre
What CamDiver is talking about is another camera from RED Digital Cinema Camera Company.
It is said to be a "pocket professional" camera. There was a leak of the name, and then Jim Jannard posted on the RedUSER forums to confirm that it is coming:
At this time everyone is long on speculation and short on details.

Good intentions aside... i think Marky boy is going off the Dreams and wishes on Red forums...I haven't seen anything conclusive yet but going by the hype Scarlet is the answer to all the dreams of the people who can't afford or don't want to afford RED...
What we have to remember is a camera on its own doesn't make you Peter Scoones or Howard Hall...its not the answer to your dreams...to some its a leg up but for most of us...not the answer...
But...we will wait and see.. ![]()

Marky you know me...I have dreams as much as the next person...Mainly 'wet' dreams ![]()
Just briefly looked at the forums of RED and it looked like people speculating on the next dream cam... feeding off crumbs as usual....BUT !!! i'm waiting results as much as the next man / woman...
What will be...will be..I'm getting fed up waiting for the Holy Cam grail...if there is such a thing.
