S&S Nikon TTL controller and Inon Z240

  1. With all due respect, to emulate the most common appearance of mid-range and wide angle underwater images, underexposure in TTL is almost mandatory and -1.5 EV sounds about right. For macro, against a light background, then exposure without compensation is often right.

If you could post some results, then the need, or otherwise, for exposure compensation would be clearer.

  2. I think that Sea&Sea uses a Heinrich OEM Converter and puts in a Housing. Does anybody know it? Seems to fit with the naming etc etc

If that is the case then it is just to go to his homepage:

    Tim,

In my experience that seems a bit excessive! Macro should in general be without compensation providing you cover 50% or more of the frame with a subject. For wide angle I don`t usually use TTL as it is not very consistent. But with film this used to be no more than -0.3 and that seems to work also with digital.

Let me just add that I know of many (only) with problems using the D200 with sea&sea converter and Inon strobes. Two of them have come over and tried my setup - Sea&Sea converter 2 + 3 and Inon z240s type 2, in my d2x housing, in their own housings and none of them have had it working. Inserting my d2x after and it all works again. To me this is strange since the d200 is supposed to be compatible with the converter, d2x isn`t... go figure!

If it works for you GREAT!

My point is, given that so many have problems with this setup I would not recomend it.

    Cheers,

    Espen :-)

  4. Hi ESpen how are you doing?

When you and Shanay will come back to Rio? :)

    Let me ask a question.

I received today my new strobes, two Z-240 type 3 to use with a Nikon D80 on S&S Housing and TTL converter 3.

Well, for my surprise the TLL with this setup did not work.

Do you thing that can be the same problem of D200?

    best regards

  5. Hi, I did other test last night and now it's working.

I realized that the TTL is not as accurate as using S&S strobe. With the Inon I've to compensate to have the best light.

    regards

    Hi Augusto,

How much did you have to compensate on your converter?

I'm thrilled it's working for you as so many are having problems with this setup and the D200. I think the D80 has a similar flash system to the one in the D200, so you might experience similar problems with the d80 as some are seeing in the D200. Let us know how it works on your next dive trip. When it works as it should it is an amazing tool.

Shanay and I will be back in Brasil June 2009. Hope we can meet and dive togeather again then.

    Best wishes from Norway!

    Espen :-)

  7. With the Nexus housing and D200 it can be used with cameras internal flash controlling the iTTL of the Z240 with the fiber optic coupling so how does this compare with the converters?

  8. Just back brom Cayman Brac using the d300 , s& S conerter version 3 with dual inonz240s. Converter was a bit overexposed with the 10-17 tokina, easily corrected by reducing the "output" on the converter or using the 0.5 inon diffuser. most shots right on. Worked great with the 60 and 105VR, only issue I had was the inability to change the shutter speed with the d300 in manual mode, it stayed at the preset sync speed. will ne checking with nikon dealer as nikon's answer was that I should have used a nikon strobe.

Slightly overexposed with WA sounds like the typical problem with WA and ttl. Getting a good exposure by using diffusers on the strobes reduces output thus getting a proper exposure on full burst instead of the overexposed without diffuser. The regulatory ittl system would produce the same light intensity on the subject with or without diffusers provided it has the power to do so with the diffuser attached.

Macro is the key to check if the ittl system is working. Are you getting well exposed curves throgh most arpertures say f5.6-f32 on the 105mm at 0.5m then its working the way it should be.

Thats great news BTW, Octopus, it sounds like the d300 works well with the converter and the z240 strobes!

I hope this continues to be true.

I have the same setup as you do, except i have the 240 type-4's. Just sold my ys110's and can justify a purchase of the s&s ttl converter III. using tokina 10-17 and nikon 60mm. I love WA with the 240's. Very tempted to buy those converters. How are you doing with your setup so far? to this date.

    many thanks,

    Ramon
