Shutter Release Mod?

  1. Well, made the trip to the hardware store today.....I think we may have found something!

I appreciate everyone's ideas and feedback--we considered everything!

Here are some pics with the mod, including the parts. Please give me some feedback....it fits tight on the lever but will still rotate. I feel it could possibly get hung up on something and come off, but for the most part it is very stable and my thumb is very happy about the placement. We bought 4 sets of these for under $10.

  2. Brilliant! Love it. Way to think outside the box, Ha!

You might think about putting some waterproof tape or heat shrink over the threads so you don't get cut on the threads of the eyebolt. When are you going to get it wet and try out your new invention?

Great idea! I won't be able to get it wet until Memorial Day weekend, unfortunately! If I have a chance to get in the pool with some students, I might be able to test it earlier. I will be sure and post the results, one way or another.

  4. so you press your shutter with the thumb ? that was the way with the old super big Ikelite housings as well. . I was going to write down I never could get used to that, only to realise I had been used to that earlier..

Only point I can think off is salt water resistance of that part: it is probably not marine grade stainless. But then, for that 10$ you can always use another.

  5. If you don't want it to rotate, you might try some marine-grade silicone. would still be able to remove the part with that whereas if you used something like epoxy, you wouldn't . . .

Yes, with the thumb. Could not figure out a way for the index finger but I am content with the thumb! We did figure the salt water would eat away at the stainless, but at that price I can just replace it! I bought 4 sets for a 12 day stay in Curacao. Hopefully that is enough!

I wonder if I can get marine-grade eye bolts and if so, where?

Good idea also about the marine silicone--would I be able to get it off the shutter release when I needed to replace the eye bolt?

  7. any boating store should have a good selection. We have West Marine here in SD and they have an entire section devoted to marine grade hardware. If you can't find it in town theres always the interweb option.

anxious to here how that works out for you. I've just become accustom to the "brace it on your wrist and make the long reach around the outside of the handle with your hand" approach...which is challenging but effective to say the least...

I hear you on that! I dont get why IKE does not allow their handles to be removed and the trays modified.

i have that problem too. i have 'tiny' hands like that guy in the BK ad who can't eat BK's double cheeseburger.

what i did was to use my middle finger to trip the shutter instead! its about 3/4 of an inch longer than my index, so it's just the right length for the shutter release.

    have you tried that?

I have and still no good. I am going to use my thumb...with the rig in the pic if feels pretty good and solid! I cant wait to try it out. As soon as I can, I will be posting some comments about the experiment.
