Singapore airlines excess baggage

  1. Has anyone had any luck getting the free 10kg divers allowance recently? And can you recommend a travel agent in the UK who can book "flights only" that has access to this special allowance?

I just spoke with their booking desk and on the London to Manado route they wanted to charge £43 per kg for the first 6 kgs. On a return flight that pretty much doubles the cost of the ticket.

    Thanks

    Tom

  2. hi

i have just been talking to singapore airlines today about baggage allowances

my question regards me taking disability aids with me , crutches and spare leg etc

it has been a bit of a mission they want to know size length and weight of everything i want to take with me

as you can imagine trying to explain everything you need extra to a non disabled person is hard

then i mentioned sports equipment , my scuba gear and they said the same as above you get 15 kgs for the price of 6 kgs but they didn't tell me the cost

in the past i have just got to the desk and blagged it with weight and not had a problem

the only reason i contact them now is to make sure that i get a bulkhead seat due to my disability

when i contact them about this you would think you are asking them to unbolt the normal seats and rearrange the whole plane !

thats my rant i could go on and on but i won't

  3. I had a problem with my carryon on my last trip on singapore air. Like many, i try to carryon a complete camera setup. They now weigh carryons, and mine was over the 15lb limit. I had to beg, and fight to get it on. Be aware of this guideline now being enforced

  4. Mr Bubbles, did the airport weigh you or the airline? Sometimes they are mutually exclusive. Talk to the airline rep if the airport staff gives you trouble.

Hey Vinny, Time to go up the chain of command. Good Luck! Don't we have any airline folks who dive?

There was a singapore air representative sitting with a scale at the checkin area for singapore air exclusively. You couldnt checkin without passing him

  7. Thanks for the advice Alex, Vinny. I did try Divequest but they don't book flights only.

Singapore Airlines are really shooting themselves in the foot here. Think I'll try British Airways rather than spoil the start of my holiday. I hate the feeling you get in your stomach as you walk up to the counter not knowing if you'll get away with the extra kg's!

    LAX? Which flight?

  9. LAX? Which flight?

I dont remember the exact day or flight, but we went out of bradly the second week of january as exec. economy direct to singapore in route to sipadan

i dont know if the USA is anything like the UK

when you phone them up you talk to someone in Delhi India !!

i am just glad the destinations are worth all the effort

I take that flight almost monthly and they have never weighed carry ons. In fact I took it last month and they didn't. But this is LAX, the place that changes security check in policies whenever they like.

  12. I sure hope it was a one time thing, as i'm going again in 2 weeks and was planning to change my packing practice

  13. That's what I'm saying MRbubbles. Every once in awhile LAX switches the check-in process. One month it was check your bags first then check in, then it was check-in then check your bags then back again. Even the airline guys were saying they changed it to suit traffic and never notified them. I'm a frequent flyer and I don't know what to do each time I go.

    Good luck with that.

  14. so singapore phoned me back today via Delhi and said pretty much the same as at the top of this thread

you get 15Kgs extra but pay for 6 Kgs at $70 singapore per Kg or £25 per Kg

so the best thing is say nothing and hope you get away with it at the airport because if you try and pre book it then it is placed on their system under your ticket reservation

only one good thing came out of the phone call they have given me an extra 11Kgs for disability items

  15. I finally and reluctantly booked with Singapore Airlines for my flights to Manado from London this summer. They worked out cheaper than anyone else so I'll just have to pack light or wear an extra big fleece to wrap my reg around my waist!

Given their new baggage policy I think it's time to move them to the "Hates divers" category.

  16. I've flown with them a couple times (and they're great), but never with so much gear. I checked their website and economy passengers are allowed one (!) carry-on not too exceed 7kg (or about 15 lbs for U.S folk). I've just been playing with my virginal new rig, and I can get it all into a 45" carry-on (which is OK), but it weighs close to 35lbs. I'm not flying out of LAX until Oct., but if they're weighing carry-ons I'll have to re-think my packing strategy - or switch airlines!

  17. I'll be flying that route again either next month or beginning of May and probably economy. Will let you know if they weigh anything although I doubt they'll disturb a PPS member.

  18. I'm in Bali right now, dealing with jet lag. I just flew from Newark NJ to Bali, on Singapore Air, stopping in Singapore on the way.

My 22" legal sized wheeled carry-on, holding my video housing and lights was weighed and put in the carry-on sizing cage. It failed both and I had to check it. My bag arrived ok, nothing damaged other than my TSA lock is gone. Of course my equipment was not re-packed the way I had it. I think a Pelican type case might be in my future.

My camcorder stayed with me in a small backpack which was not weighed.

  19. I think Singapore are one of the worst for nailing you for over weight. Saying that all the Airlines seem to have a negotiable take a chance card (Monopoly) attitude to baggage at the moment.

I've Just arrived back from Cebu via KK and an overnight in KL with Malaysia Airlines. My wife an i had 64kg check-in between us at Perth expecting to pay excess, "if your both divers sir no problem" i asked is that ok for all our flights "yes sir". Any way to cut a long story short no problems except when fly through KL, both ways i had to get the check-in manager to approve our excess as divers.

I you look on Malaysias website or phone them you are aloud to carry scuba gear but you have to pay for any total check-in over 20kg per person. I think it's just like the lottery except a lot better odds.

I always carry a camera Jacket in my hand luggage just in case they find where the real weight is!
