Canon 40D set-up...

  1. Would LOVE to, but live on Guam...the air fare would be half the price of the housing!

I'll save you the trouble, send me the air fare and I'll bring you one to play with.

I guess you've thought about lurking around the dive boats when they come back in and checking out the gear.

If I was you I'd give Backscatter a call.

  2. I have the Aquatica housing for my 40D and it is built like a tank just like the Aquatica housing I had for my 20D. I switched from Ikelite to Aquatica when I had the 20D and have been happy ever since. I've had very few issues with Aquatica but when they come up, the folks in Canada are just as responsive as the folks in Indiana. Too bad you can't attend a trade show where you can check out all the brands because there seems to be quite a few of them available for the 40D.

  3. TomC, How do you find the twin z240's go? I was looking at these as well with the Aquatica. How negative is the rig in the water? Are you using floats?

Oh, and did you go with the 8" done, or the 9." mega dome?

    Thanks for the help!

    Ryan.

Inon Z-240 strobes: A real pleasure to own. I switched from DS-125 strobes at the same time I changed housings and have not found them lacking in any way. Usually, I leave the strobes set at approximately 3/4 power for w/a and less for macro, consequently I have not experienced any recycle time objections. I have found that when I use a lens that allows me to get close to a subject, either w/a or macro, the Inon strobes are more than sufficient; in fact, less powerful strobes would probably work OK. They are great for travel and the battery issue is a big plus for me as all my dive lights also take AA batteries. I own one fast charger and a bunch of batteries.

Floats: I just ordered my first set of Stix floats after handling a buddy's rig. I will get a chance to use them in Nov. My rig is negative; that has not bothered me but I imagine that improvements could be made in this area.

Dome Port: I have the 8" dome and a 6" dome. I really like the 6" dome as it is smaller and easier for travel. (You may have noticed, I am into a more travel friendly setup.) However, I will take the 8" dome with me to Raja Ampat in Nov. and leave the 6" dome at home. I see all the fantastic wide angle, over/under and under/over shots from that area and think that the larger dome will be better for this type of photography. I am not extremely well versed in this regard but I imagine that the mega dome might be more applicable to a full frame camera than a camera with a cropped sensor.

  5. Many thanks for the onfo Tom. What lenses are you using behind the 6' dome? Do you find that it performs as well as the 8" for WA shots (wrecks, large marine life, reefs shots, etc?).

Anyone else have an opinion on this? The lenses I currently have that I'll house behind a dome are the Sigma 17-70 and Tokina 11-16, and will follow that up with a Tokina 10-16FE.

I personally can not tell you what difference there would be in performance between the 6" dome and the 8" dome for really wide shots, I do not notice any but I am not as critical as someone else might be. I currently use the Tokina 10-17 fisheye and the Sigma 17-70 macro with the 6" dome without any problems that I can tell.

Attached is a CFWA shot at 10mm from a recent trip to Cozumel. This is a full frame shot. You be the judge.
