It has finally happened!

  1. and all I can say is WOW !! There are pro's and con's for the RED at this point in time. It is still very much a work in progress and is definitely NOT intended for work in the field or EFP scenario. However the image is WOW, WOW and double WOW when nailed correctly. I can't say the project or where due to NDA's etc but am I glad I waited all this time to get my hands on one. I was initially concerned as there is nothing automatic about the system but with some very nice touches to aid in exposure and focus I can say that a complete Noob like me, with regards to pure cinematography away from the World of 1/3" CCD Cameras, I found it a breeze. Its gonna be a great adventure using this system in the future.

As for the EX1 I loved the little thing. The image is great and its a nicely thought out system. The only thing I gripe about is the Sony propriety software as an interface between its media and FCP.

Anyway, must dash. Filming Tiger sharks with the RED tomorrow morning.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  2. Mark,

Congrats Bro--Nice to hear that you finally got it wet. I have been fallowing the work flow and learning curve on the RED forum, I am not envious--alot of work but a amazing image. Thats a sweet pay off!! Is the Ex1 yours? what housing do you have for it--can we see some pics and any screen grabs to wet our whistels!! NICE

  3. Cool news, Mark. I hope that you get some red hot, smoking footage of the tigers today.

Hiya mate - Zoe keeps nagging me to see if you've found any teeth yet?!? :P Sounds like you're really rolling out there now - great stuff. Live the dream then come tell us all about it!

  5. sorry Simon, he is coming to Bali first to tell me about it.

is that still part of living the dream?

looking forward to hearing it first hand Mark!

  6. Cangrats to Mark hope you get some banging images ,

  7. Hey Mike, living the dream and dreaming about you are two completely different things thank goodness. Glad I'm still sane on that point.

In six months of diving I've been skunked twice on the Tigers, and yesterday was on of them. Bummer big time. There was one Tiger at the start of the dive but once I had got down to the dive depth and sorted myself out the camera start up time, 90 seconds + -, had a greater duration than the sharks presence.

I guess I will have to hang on the Tiger footage deal. I leave SA on Friday evening so will have to wait for the next trip as the next two days will be spent sorting all the remaining gear out and getting it sent to where it needs to get to.

Attached though are a couple of still shots of the systems in their AquaVideo housings. The operators are Ken Corben and Johnny Friday. Please don't ask for footage clips as al this is under NDA at the moment and will be politely (depending on the number of requests) refused.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

p.s I tried posting images 3 times but the site just hangs!!

  8. Lets have a look at some footage ???

  9. As a total ignoramus on this stuff, why are things like camera start-up, controls, workflow a problem with this camera. In stills, upgrades in format quality, size etc are not accompanied by backward movement in camera controls, ease of use, post-processing etc. Why with this?

Can anybody explain this with as few acronyms as possible?

  10. few as possible?

    ok...

the regular editing platforms can't handle/read RED raw format, has to be converted to something else first.

    easy enough?

  11. easy enough?

    Yup - I understood it.

Thanks, but why slower camera start-up, fewer controls etc.

    :P

my good deed for the day

Thanks, but why slower camera start-up, fewer controls etc.

i am only here for the easy questions

i don't think it has fewer controls, not really sure.

as for slow start up.. no clue

Hopefully Mark has some more time in the next few days to address these questions

  14. The system is shooting RAW as its native format so no need for White Balancing. No auto features so all focusing, Iris selection and Telephoto are done directly on the manual lens rings, with prime lenses even less to work. As yet the camera is set before going underwater so no need to access the menu settings and in any case when shooting to either the Hard Drive or the CF card one can't change the shooting parameters of the project mid way through, i.e if I start shooting a 4k project I can't continue with the same in 2k unless I format the drive. Format the drive and lose the previously recorded media.

The system runs quite warm so there is also quite a noisy fan which can be selected to run at either low, medium or high rpm depending on the ambient temp.

Above all it is a software based system so, like your regular computer, it requires a certain boot up time, in this case circa 90 seconds.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Lens in use is the Arri 8R (Google the price of that baby) !!

Controls on Left are On / Off, Iris, Focus, Telephoto and Expanded Focus, +1 User Assign

    Controls on Right = Record

Sorry about the smudge under the front part of the housing. A Pesky diver allowed me to show off my crappy grasp of Photoshop.

  18. Hey Mark, after seeing that housing, all I have to say is that the airlines are going to love you for bailing them out of their financial mess after they are done with your weight charges. The set up looks unreal!!! See you soon.

  19. Dean, nothing surprises me mate. Always knew you were a deviant.

Steve, the client gets billed. BIG Time, for the excess baggage fee's. It's all good.

    See you soon.
