Alex, do you want to borrow my heated waistband so you don't end up eating your words??!!

I had a positively toasty dive on Swanage Pier the other week at 18 deg!! :P

  5. It is used here in under-graduate lectures, although we tend to use it for crustaceans carrying eggs (we don't have sea dragons down this way).

    Alex

have you not dived weston shore alex !!!

  7. Great shots and I appreciate all the tips as well.

No dry suit diving for me, I'll stick to the bone chilling 76F temps here in Hawaii!

    Cheers :P

  8. Cal great shots of the leafy. Iconic species. I have been planning a trip from Melb to SA to go find one of these guys myself. Keep gettign stuck in Warnambool and Port Fairy though. Its such a long drive! Are you based in Victoria? We should meet up some time!

Oh and Alex - glad to hear that you are planning a trip to Victoria and Tassie. Be very interested in meeting up with you too when you make the journey.

    Steve

  9. Yo,

    Thanks Shark and Steve!

Yeah I'm in Victoria, the place to be!

    What about you?

If your around here we should defiantly head out for a day on the bay!

  10. If you left your trip until December, you would catch the early males in 'berry'...

Bruce, thanks for the tip - but this trip I'll be happy just to see them

"I'm headed to Edithburg in August to try what you've just done so well "

Wow! That means alot to me. Thanks. you just made my night!

They are great Cal. Have you more to show anywhere?

    Cal!

    Hold on 11°C ??? :D:P:D

Hopefully my 5mm will provide enough protection. If not I'll have to snuggle up to you Cal. hahahhaha

  12. 5mm semi dry and you might last more then 60 mins. Try a 2-3 dives a day in a wet suit and you'll be suffering pretty badly!

Its going to be quite a shock but it'll be worth it!

I have to agree with Cal.

I used to change wetsuits between dives so that I always started out dry.

But once you're cold and your core temp is down, there is nuttin' that's bringing it back up in a hurry.

If Cal was a decent host, he would lend you his drysuit... :D

    Bruce...

  14. haha but even my dry suit leaks !

I wear two layers of thermals under my semi dry if i use it in winter.

    Gotta love cold water diving

I am sorry for my ignorance but is there a time of year in which the water temp is around 20°C or higher?

    Cheers,

    Jeff

  16. haha don't apologize!

    around November -December.

    Bruce might know more

Dont be scared off though. You can still dive in a wetsuit, it'll just be cold

    Cal

  17. what a great photos!, 1 and 5 are (in my opinion) the best :)

  18. Great shots. i did the Kangaroo Island thing once. Really liked the Seadragons. Even better than the White Sharks. Interesting to see that Kangaroo Island diving is not considered the best around.

I thought flying from California was a long trip. I would love to try that road trip. One side note is that the dive operators said that we California divers handled the cold water better than did most of their Australian clients. Of course we all brought dry suits. If we dive those temperatures in CA with a wet suit we usually have at least 13 mm of material in at least two or three layers. We were there in April I believe.

  19. I'm very impressed! Great! :)

  20. "I thought flying from California was a long trip" - you win!!! thats a huge effort....

"Interesting to see that Kangaroo Island diving is not considered the best around." - what makes you say that? Its meant to be great its just that we thought we'd have a better chance of leafies at wool bay.

Yeah fair call, I can imagine that. What temp does it get to there?
