Canon G10 housing modification

  1. My G10 housing modification:

This is prototype. I am making a LCD viewer now.

I dive with 2 U/W cameras. So I made this modification as small as possible.

    1) Base:

Three angle aluminium plates were glued by very strong double-stick tape.

    post-23042-1232375227.jpg

    2) 67mm lens adapter

    post-23042-1232375551.jpg

"Open the door style" lens adapter enables you change the mode quickly.

    3) focus light

    post-23042-1232376320.jpg

cutting the GENTOS PATRIO PRO 1W LED light and DIY battery case.

    4) ministrobe with arm

    attach the strobe

    post-23042-1232377879.jpg

    5) usual use (wide and macro) & supermacro use

    post-23042-1232378193.jpg

left:for wide and macro use :the lens adapter open and ministrobe straight up

right:for supermacro use: the lens adapter closed and ministorobe bent

When the strobe is bent, it faces the object. :)

The lens is DIY supermacro lens which is made with 2 KENKO AC close up lens No.5.

    -----------------------------------

I think that it is more difficult how to attach the optional parts to the housing

than how to make the optional parts.

I hope my experience helps you.

Thank you & sorry my english.

  2. :) Wow!!! Have you dived with the kit? How does the very strong double sized tape hold? Any brand to recommend?

As I m looking at strobe n focus lights, so yours look very very interesting. Can share more details, please?

  3. Those are some really nice mods. What are you using to fire the strobe? Sync cord, fiber optic or slave mode? I have a G10 as well and will be getting a housing very soon.

    Keep it up!

    Thank you, xariatay.

No,I have not dive with the kit. This weekend I want to dive.

But I must make the LCD viewer and the weather is bad now..

The double coated tape I used is 3M Scotch KF-19.

This tape is tranparent and very strongly adhensive.

I first made this light waterproof about 4 years ago. i've used it since then.

Details were up at my HP. But sorry, explanation is in Japanese.

I list up the pages in my HP which might help you.

    Thank you, scubajunkee.

This ministrobe is 'SF-DG100' by KONICA-MINOLTA.

This is slave strobe. This strobe was very cheap(about $20 USD)

but the company is not present now so we could not get this strobe.

    Let's enjoy nice diving with G10! :)

  6. I've just made a LCD viewer which may be necessary for senior photo divers.

    1)Accomplishment

    post-23042-1233058564.jpg

I have made some viewers of the compact digicame housings.

Recently a compact digicame has the larger LCD. So it becomes somewhat

difficult to make a compact viewer with only cheap magifying glasses.

The dials and buttons are quite close to the LCD. So there is no room.

To manipulate these controls freely, the lens is supported by 2 narrow aluminium plates.

The LCD is so bright that I can see the LCD well without a hood.

    2)

    post-23042-1233061156.jpg

    post-23042-1233061185.jpg

Two cheap(100yen, about $1USD)magifying lenses are faced each other in the polyvinyl chloride pipe and sealed with acrylic plates.

    3)

    post-23042-1233061339.jpg

The lens is insert antoher PVC pipe for adjustment of its diopter to my eyes.

Two narrow plates to support the lens and their base plates:

The screw pierces through the base plate.

They are made with 0.3mm thick aluminium which is cut easily by scissors.

    4)

    post-23042-1233061367.jpg

Two base plates are attached to the housing by super strong double coated tape.

    5)

    post-23042-1233061400.jpg

The supporting plates are fixed with nuts to the base plates.

 I think this method is very useful to fix some options to the housing. :)

    6)

    post-23042-1233061429.jpg

Likewise the lens is fixed to the supporting plates.

The plates are bandaged with plastic tape and finish!

I'm ready now for taking U/W photos but the weather is so bad...orz

  7. You may have just earned yourself the "most mod to a point & shoot camera I have ever seen" award! I would love to see the result myself. In fact PM me and I'd love to publish this on DivePhotoGuide. I've been getting tons of emails about the G10 and the fact that you can;t add a w/a adapter to it.

Thank you very much for your positive reply.

I could not see your last sentence correctly..:you can;t add a w/a adapter to it.

My open type adapter has a 67mm filter thread.

So any conversion lens can be attached with stepping ring.

I have tested 4 w/a conversion lenses and "air doom lens" at my bath.

    post-23042-1233469822.jpg

A:SUPER FISH EYE LENS 0.25x (not waterproof)

B:KENKO SEMI FISH EYE 0.45x (DIY waterproof)

C:"GYOROME" :it's a very small circular fisheye lens made in Japan(DIY waterproof)

D:Sea&Sea WA lens old type (waterproof)

E:"air doom lens" (I made this 8 years ago. a simple acrylic hemisphere. This works as a field compressor under water. )

    Result:

W/A effect was cancelled in 3 lenses(B,C,D) by zooming to avoid vignetting.

Only one lens (A) showed very slightly WA effect.

I showed the result of the WA lens D and D+E:

    post-23042-1233471369.jpg

1:with no WA conversion lens. only G10:maximally WA

    2:with Sea&Sea WA lens. G10:maximally WA

3:with Sea&Sea WA lens. To avoid vignetting, zooming G10.

(to see the result easily, i show the photo with slightly vignetting)

    4:with SEA&SEA WA lens+"air doom lens". G10:zooming

This showed a little wider angle effect than only G10.

I think that A+E (i have to waterproof A) may be useful

but at present it is not so useful to attach the commercial available W/A lens to G10.

    Thank you.

  9. Actually what I meant was that you skillfully solved the problem of the G10 otherwise not being able to use these lenses. Looks like you did an excellent job!

  10. Thank you, xariatay.

  11. DIY WA (semifisheye) lens for Canon G10 housing

    Hi,

Canon G10 features a 28mm wide angle lens, which is wider than the Canon G9's.

But 28mm WA is not sufficient for me. No wide angle lens is currently available for Canon housing.

So I made a WA (semifisheye) lens for it. This is preliminary report.

I made a SUPER FISH EYE LENS 0.25x waterproofed with an acrylic dome.

    post-23042-1235656070.jpg

It is easy to say that but somewhat difficult to do.

Although the lens is made in Japan, I cannot find it in Japan now but at ebay.

An experiment was carried out in my bathtub.

    post-23042-1235656089.jpg

A 80cm aluminum plate was sunk at bottom of the bathtub (30cm deep).

The distance between the yellow markers is 10cm.

    Result:

    post-23042-1235656107.jpg

    A:G10 wide max

B:G10+DIYsemifisheye. Zoom up to no vignette.

    C:G10+DIYsemifisheye. G10:wide mode

    D:G10+DIYsemifisheye. G10:wide max

    Angle of View:

    post-23042-1235656121.jpg

With the DIYsemifisheye lens and G10 wide mode, I could take a picture about 90 degree of view angle without vignette.

I think this lens is usefull.

    Next:

How do I carry the lens to the undersea ?

How do I delete the shadow due to the intenal flash ?

So I'm going to the modification Ver.2.

    (to be continued)

  12. What brand of double-stick tape do you use ?

  13. The double coated tape I used is 3M Scotch KF-19.

Today I have dove twice, 16m & 7m depth with no flood of the lens.

  14. My Canon G10 housing modification Ver. 2 is as following picture:

    post-23042-1236001690.jpg

( I didnt take its photo on land. :P )

All the parts are my DIY.

I have attached hood to the semifisheye lens and protected it by the cover.

    post-23042-1236003557.jpg

Yesterday I dove with this. I will briefly report the results:

The following three picts shows the difference between the picts taken by G10 widest angle

(f=6.1mm) and those by G10 zooming (f=about13mm) with my DIY semifisheye lens.

    post-23042-1236002393.jpg

    post-23042-1236002479.jpg

    post-23042-1236002557.jpg

(these photos were taken in G10 wide mode. The red mark points the same place.)

This photo was taken with the macrolens1+macrolens2.

The sea slug length is about 5mm. No cropping.

    post-23042-1236003170.jpg

I think it is great to be able to take a photo from supermacro to such a wide angle

as shown by an inexpensive housing & camera under the sea.

  15. Hi hanachan,

    congratulation for your work !

Have you a detailed pics of your WA lens assembly ?

There is only a dome or dome+lens ?

What kind of dome have you use ? have you a link of the Ebay store ?

    Best regards

    Thank you, Jcdignan.

Yes I have the pics. I always take the pics of my DIY process.

I will upload the pics at this forum and my HP later.

    Dome+lens.

It is a general acrylic hemisphere sold at the internet acrylic shop.

This type of acrylic dome seems not to be sold at the eBay store.

    Please google with "acrylic dome".

  17. Hello Hanachan,

also from me congratulations to your work. Those are impessive projects!

I did also look at your website. Although I do not understand Japanese, the automatic translation from Babel fish made it understandable for me. And some of the results of its translation are quite funny  :aggressive:

    Keep up the good work!

    Thank you, Fred

I also use the automatic translation but it is useless in many cases.

In addition my Japanese itself is funny maybe.

Tell me the page which you want to know, I will try to translate it in English.

  19. :vava: Good job, hanachan! Glad that u managed to go diving & test out the system! Very nice results!
