Sea & Sea housing for D90 ???

31 posts
  1. I have just sold my D200 Sea & Sea rig and now I need some new toys. I was originally looking at the D300, but given the time with PMA just around the corner and after reading some reviews of the D90 I have begun looking at other options - either wait for a D400 (which I hope will be announced at PMA i march) or maybe get a D90 !

I have heard somewhere that Sea & Sea maybe is in the progress of making a D90 housing, but I can't find anything about it anywhere (maybe it's just a rumor). But given the slow slow update pace of the folks behind the Sea & Sea webpage ( still no info about the D700 housing on the site, eventhough my local diveshop says that it is up for order now ) maybe someone in here know anything about a housing in the making ?

A mixed post about a new housing and a shout to Sea & Sea to update their website with work in progress and general news :)

  2. I'm waiting for this housing as well:)

Someone mentioned here that it's going to be the new 'RDX' polycarbonate series.

I wander how well it will work with inon strobes.

What worries me is that Nikon port chart doesn’t mention Tokina 10-17 and sea&sea is not responding to my emails?

  3. I don't believe Sea & Sea is building for this camera.

10-17 does work in the RDX Housing in several iterations.

  4. Hi

I have approached a swedish distributor of Sea&Sea and asked about a housing for the D90. I have in reply been sent there pricelist that contains information of that a RDX housing will be ready for sales early 2009, however partnumber and exact date for this is not given on this list.

I think that we can be confident of that a Sea&Sea RDX housing for the D90 will be awailable soon.

I have looked for general information and reviews of the RDX housings without success for a while. I am currently using Ikelite, but have thoughts of getting a more ergonomic and robust housing. I am confident that the Sea&Sea RDX housings will be ergonomicly buildt enough however I am a bit concerned about the robustness of a plastic housing, in the same way as I feel about my Ikelite housing. I have managed to cause a crack in an Ikelite housing ones...

  5. I wanted a D90, but on a MDX Sea&Sea housing...

The delay in the lauch and the probability of it coming as a RDX housing made me jump to the D300.

Best decision in my life!!! In fact I think the D300+MDX housing is the best gear for UWPhoto nowadays, based on size, performance, speed, DX lens choice, housing ergonomics and finishing...

For the ones waiting for the D400 I would go for the D300 today. It doesn't look D400 will come at PMA, and the housing for it might only come in the last quarter of the year, if at all in 2009.

Best advice I got from many friends: "Just get the best you can buy now"

I will try to never wait for something that it is not there anymore.

  6. I just emailed Sea and Sea (in Long Beach, CA) about a D90 housing yesterday. The reply I received was:

Currently there are no plans for a D90 housing. Of course, this can change but if there is no development plans currently the housing would be at least 6 months away from delivery.

    Hope this helps.

  7. They are definitely stepping on their toes big time... This could be a big seller, and there is a good number of people getting a D90 as the first SLR, it's market share they are losing. I am not so sure about the success of the RDX series as well... sad.

I was answering an e-mail of a friend that asked about this Aquatica AD90 housing:

The technology of the AD90 is 10 years old (molded aluminum), it is the same Sea&Sea used to make the NX65,80,100 and 5 series, and later abandoned when the digital cameras came into the market, because of their command complexity.

    Look at the measurements:

    AD90 x MDX-D300

    33.6 x 33.0 in width (D300 is 6mm thinner)

    17.1 x 16.3 in height (D300 is almost 1cm shorter)

    13.3 x 13.6 in depth (AD90 is just 3mm thinner)

With the difference in size of these cameras, it is clear (and just looking at it you can see) that the AD90 is awfully big.

If Sea&Sea went on with an MDX-D90 housing I am pretty sure it would be the best in the market (I would probably be shooting) with it now.

My MDX-D300 operates underwater just as a big camera, very compact and direct, accessing all controls without taking the hand of the handle, the MDX-D90 would be even better!!!

    Sad...

  8. Marcello, the Aquatica AD90 is machined from solid aluminum and not from a casting (molded) as you suggest, and is one of the smallest and lightess housing we ever made, I included dimension with grips as well, since those are always provided as standard with our housing, (I heard from good source that the RDX serie does not include the grip and that they need to be purchased separetly). The housing could be made smaller still, since we work with a 5 axis machine we can pretty much give it the shape/size we want, we opted for a bit of air space to lighten up the operating weight of the housing underwater, this tend to be critically negative if the air "bubble" inside the housing is neglected.

    Size:

    W 8.5” (13.25" with grip attached) x D 5.25" x H 6.75”

    W 21.6cm (33.6cm with grips attached) x D 13.3cm x H 17.15 cm

Weight with grips: 6.25 lbs. 2.83 kg

    D300 without grip

    Size:

    W 9" x D 5.25" x H 6.625"

    W22.9cm x D13.4 cm x H16.2cm

    Weight: 6 lbs. 3.3 kg

  9. Jean:

You are correct, the RDX series housings do not come with handles. Sea & Sea has a handle system, or many opt to go with the ULCS Digital tray and Handle system which works well on the RDX housings.

  10. You are right Carlos, definitely an option indeed!!!

RDX housings are all acrylic ones and should be compared in size/options with Ikelite housings (they were actually build to compete with them) it is a pity Sea&Sea might never have an MDX-D90 to compare. Its a big mistake on their side I believe.

I guess the new handle has something to do with buoyancy control/structural strenght on these new RDX housings...

I prefer smaller housings, better to travel and to operate underwater, but that's only my personal preference.

Even with your intent of designing a more neutral housing, I see lot's people diving with Aquatica with loads of buoyancy devices, personally I have never used them with my Sea&Sea or Hugyfot housings, but that again might be a matter of personal preference.

Just to update the info to our members on sizes, comparing 2 machined aluminum housings for the same camera now:

    AD90 x Hugyfot D90 (no handles involved)

    21.6 x 20.8 in width (Hugy is 8mm thinner)

17.1 x 16.0 in height (Hugy more than 1cm shorter)

    13.3 x 12.5 in depth (Hugy is 8mm thinner)

Your AD300 seems a lot more in tune with the compactness I like.

But the numbers from the AD90 are not what I would expect from a machined housing, with such tech invloved I think we can reduce the thickness of the housing, reduce the air bubble and maintain buoyancy control, that is heavily affected by the port system anyway... Hugyfot seems to have achieved that. Anyway I haven't seen any complains about the MDXs or Hugys being too negative. I use an MDX-D300 with the OLD aluminum arms and the smallest domes/ports, and I don't feel the system to be heavy, but again I like it a little negative, specially for macro work.

The best thing about Aquatica AD90 is being there, and the availability of sellers and service. That also counts when you choose.

I have never used the new AD Aquatica series, but visually I guess they could have a better finish if machined out of an aluminum block They look A LOT like my old NX80, thus my misconception.

But from my experience, knowing at least 3 people with the new Aquatica D300 housings, the preciseness level of the commands (and the rate of turns need to action them) is a good bit better on Sea&Sea housings that said from Aquatica users. What most of them (and even some Sea&Sea users!!!) also say is that they feel Aquatica housings are stronger, but since we don't have crash-tests for housings that's difficult to quantify.

I know that because where I come from in Brazil, on our National Competitions we see housings from different makers (but for the same camera) side by side and we talk/experiment a lot all the difference.

It is good to have direct contact with the industry in this list, it shows a big service focus from Aquatica, but I would not expect any different answer from you as well. Anyway, thanks for pointing out the flaw in my observation.

I have no data from people using Subal, Nexus or other housings. It would be nice to hear their comments.

Anyway, thanks for dropping by... I REALLY wish someone from Sea&Sea Japan would do the same!

  11. Isn't Nexus also make a housing for D90 now ? Or modify their D80 to become D90. Are they not up to the same level of performance as S&S or Aquatica ? I am thinking of getting their housing later this year unless SeaTool deliver before then.

    Cheers !

  12. Amen to hoping Seatool will get a move on their D90 housing!!!

I only wish that some of these other manufacturers would also read these forums and have a representative replying to at least some questions. :D

Personally I like the look of the finish on the Aquatica, if I was able to configure it as one would be able to configure the Seatool, i.e. to fit a hand strap, to a a place for a ball fitting which would take the lefthand trobe, ability to fire strobes with fibre optics and compact design, I would have ordered one by now;)

  13. Well, I'll have to wait for a Subal ND90... Besides I have the Ports and Domes...

There should be devices to use Ports and Domes from one Manufacturer to another... Wouldn't it be nice?

  14. I know Hugyfot does them for most port systems.

  15. Seatool also support a ports from a numder of other manufacturers, as far as i know Subal is one of them.

And yes its a good idea.

The good folks at Aquatica have answered your wishes with the latest addition to their line up.

  17. It's interesting that Sea&Sea doesn't plan a housing for one of the most popular cameras at the moment!

I just bought D90 for land use and probably I'll buy a housing in future (but not soon), so luckly I'm not in rush, will wait and see what is on the market.

I like the RDX concept, cheap, light housing with optical bulkhead but there are others as well!
