RED One housing field tests

  1. I read this last night and had to wait for the convulsions of laughter to subside to a state where I could type correctly!! Wealthy in experience mate, that's about all. As you know the big thing is having a strong partner, someone who backs up your ideas with moral support and understanding. I have that in my wife, Terri. She knows where I want to go with this and lets me work towards that. Giving up some of the luxuries that some people covet in order to progress is the way we do things. Almost out of the woods and on the way, with her support never waning. I consider myself to be very lucky in that regard.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Hey Mark, That's exactly what I meant. ;-)

  2. A link to a webpage with videoclips from the RED shootout in Palau will also be included in Mark's upcoming report....

Can't say more for now, or Mark will come back to Palau and feed me to the sharks.... :-)

    Hi All,

Just wanted to mention Nick here. Courtesy of his underwater imaging services at the Sams Dive Store in Palau will be the reason there are BTS images to share. You can imagine that when in the zone we get kinda focused on the issue at hand and block the world out. Nick allowed us to do that and kept his cameras rolling to share with you.

For more info on Nick and his work please check out his site.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  4. Hey Mark.

I just wanted to let everybody here know what a pleasure it has been to work with your team.

The shoot was a blast. Of course, at times it was so tempting to dump my Z1 and grab one of the REDs!

But, I had to stay in my own "zone", so you guys could stay in yours... :-)

Hope the report is coming out nicely. The page with the videoclips is ready to go.

Will be glad to let the cat out of the bag when you're ready...

Slightly offtopic here, but who was your divemaster at Sams tours? When I was there a few years ago I had a great divemaster for some tech dives we were doing.

I cant remember his name but he loved to chew that nut that stains their teeth. He was tall, thin, dark hair, originally from the states.he was the only diver (besides sam) who was certed to tech dive.

  6. Gbrandon, that would be Matt.

He is no longer there though.

  7. Just an FYI

My part of the report has now been completed. It is in the hands of the second shooter who needs to add his opinions and we should be set to go.

    Thanks for waiting,

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  8. Ohh man I cant wait. Its been a long weekend shooting so I havent had the time to write up my thoughts yet....or even look at much of all footage we shot. Not sure how it was for you Mark, but shooting without lights in Green water in Cali...the Red low light performance certainly did not compare to the EX1's performance (we shot both cams simultaneously underwater)

  9. Never really needed to go into low light scenarios without light. Night diving was done with a mix of Squid 250w HID's from Greenforce and also surface supplied, only ever heard good things with regards to the low light results in conjunction with ISO manipulation of the RED. I once saw a scene that had been lit with a single match at 1SO1000. Looked fine, side of someone's face.

This paper will not be going into the tech specs of the camera or housing. It is merely a reflection on the field handling of the housings we had at hand.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  10. Thanks Mark. Im spending some time playing with the footage in the editing software this week so Ill see how it goes.

Will the RED get better lowlight performance as they finish the specs? maybe change some stuff before they finally release it?

What do you mean Mike? Did the EX1 perform better?

    Darek

  14. The "theoretical" answer is that the EX1 will be brighter than the Red One based on sensor size. The Red Mysterium Sensor is 24.4mm x 13.7mm with 4k resolution. The EX1 Exmor sensor is 3x 1/2" at approx 11.07mm x 6.23mm. Area of sensor wise, the Mysterium sensor has 334.28mm sq to fit 4k pixels at 12bit whereas the EX1 has 206.89 sq mm to fit 1920x1080 at 10bit. Pixel density alone, the EX1 has less to deal with since the prism splits RGB onto different sensors.

Of course, noise processor is not only about the sensor size and resolution but also signal processing etc etc.

The tests have shown the Red camera to be at 320ISO (red's own rating) sensitivity and the EX1 is at 400ISO (as tested by Adam Wilt). This is 0db gain. This is just a cursory explanation of why the EX1 performs better in low light. It's more intricate and really not worth knowing. :turtle:

What is also important to note is that Redcode is raw and thus needs post to finish. The EX1 has a ready picture out of camera. 2 different cameras.

  15. Yep they are two totally different cams!

I just got back this morning from a remote deserted island in the Southern Ocean after the first part of a feature which we were shooting on RED and Arri master prime lenses. What an awesome piece of kit but definitely not a run and gun cam...

I'm looking forward to getting it in the water with a custom made housing in June with the 14mm Master Prime lens (the only one is Australia) and custom made port.

  16. Drew made a very valid point regarding the difference of the EX1 vs. Red. I am definitely on the learning curve of the Red...and not being much of a Post guy myself, I like to look at the Raw footage. Of course with editing you can do wonders...and editing is something definitely required with the Red. In the last week Ive been playing with my footage a bit here and there in Red Cine...and learning quite abit about how much you can do with this camera in post (too much it gives me a headache looking at the screen that long). Regarding the Ex1, although having not personally tested the ISo rating, Ive heard from many of our local shooters and producers in Hollywood that the EX1 is anywhere from 400-800 ASA at 0DB...depending on who did the test. Either way, after having nearly 200 dives with the EX1, Ive never experienced a camera underwater that performs so great in low light.

Next time I take the RED out will be late this month/early May...as soon as we receive our new housing. The plan is to shoot it with 4 of the L&M Sunray 2000 LED lights as opposed to natural light (and lets hope we have a good day of vis to go with it)

  17. Mike the EX1 is rated at ISO800 at 60i (double row summation = 2x progressive ISO).

  18. Thank you for the info.

I'm very happy with my EX1 but I'm waiting for Scarlet. I hope it will fit into much smaller housing. Traveling with all that gear is a nightmare as you know...

    Darek

  19. Thank you Drew.

  20. Yep that just about concludes that the Ex1 is better in 'maybe' at first press of the record button in low light, than RED in certain conditions and situations... But after the magic of post etc etc it probably wont/will be...

So all you peeps who are saving, robbing old ladies, selling your arses to own a Red will not be disappointed to know that a camera that costs well less will be better...

Is it me or was that a little bit obvious at the start... :turtle:
