Roadmap Leaked For Nikon?

Alex is just psyching himself down so he won't upgrade. Internally he's actually chanting "D700x in the same body please!" :D

  2. I think I agree - it will be the D3x sensor in a D700 body is my prediction. Price will be slightly higher than the price of the 5DII when it was introduced (which was $2,699).

    Cheers

Externally too. I was just in my local camera shop saying those exact words!

Although i was actually there to see if the 14-24mm would work on an extension tube. Alas no, on a 12mm, the shortest they had in store. Completely off topic - anyone know where I can get shorter than 12mm (e.g. 9mm) extension tube with Nikon fit and electronic contacts.

Have a Nikon meeting on Monday - maybe they will let something slip...

Extension tube with a 14-24 underwater? You got me Alex.

  5. Extension tube with a 14-24 underwater? You got me Alex.

Actually, it was extension tube with 14-24mm in a shop. And it didn't work. Wanna try a 9mm one before I give up on the idea.

  6. What would the D700x offer? Does that suggest DX lenses? As opposed to D700s which would be another FF body.

I am still having trouble (how unique am I?), in deciding on a housing for a D300 or a D700. Would the above travel kit off best of both worlds?

    Thanks

    Yo Bob,

There is a thread on DX vs. FF for underwater photography somewhere on wetpixel. Personally, I'll stay with DX for u/w. I eyeballed some of you pics. Nice work. Somewhere around 2011 I will be getting a FF DSRL and some PC lenses for landscape & architectural work. I think you would want an FF for your topside stuff. If Nikon makes a 17 PC like Canon has, then FF it is 17 (awesome & very scary for PC) and DX it's a 28 mm. A twofor!!! Likewise on your tellies.

My wife and I will be schlepping around the Kenai Peninsular next week. Can you put a cork in the rain clouds?

Well we're not sure if and when it happens what it will offer, but we're assuming (hoping) it's a 24MP in a D700 body with video.

I always like to travel with 2 bodies, one kept in the housing, one ready with a 70-200 usually topside, (used to be 2 D200's) and when I do pool shots, I like a camera in the housing and a second topside camera as well. I've held out buying a second D700 body in anticipation of a D700x. and I've pretty much left DX behind, not because I think FX is necessarily better underwater, but because staying with one format for topside and underwater just makes more sense for me. The one thing the D700 does bring to underwater shooting is higher ISO possibilities, which may not be important to many people. Topside I shoot quite a bit at night of the local music scene, dance etc and there really is no comparison between the D700 and D300 for this type of shooting. So a D700 / D700x combination should provide the best of all worlds, and short of some major jump in technology (like built in HDR or something) is likely to keep me happy for a good few years. Even Thom Hogan contemplates things this way, finding it hard to imagine what more he could want in a photographic tool with the present range of Nikon cameras. (He shoots D3 and D3x I believe)

And an added benefit of Nikon FX is the ability to use all your DX lenses, so with a D700x and a Tokina 10-17 for example, one still has a very respectable 12MP camera. The only thing I miss from DX is using that lens, so much so that I'd rather add a teleconvertor to it than give it up.

Fotogen made some 9 mm tubes but I am not sure they have electronics (I would be surprised) and there were some from Kiev (a long time ago)

Thanks, but that site will expire the end of this month :D Time for a real website! Never added images for spending an entire summer in Denali, two trips to The Ice, and NZ and OZ. Been busy, for sure. D700 excelled!

Need anything, give me a holler. Except, we do need the rain!

My thoughts too. Was all set to get a second FF as backup and leave DX behind too, but then decided to get an U/W housing! Which began my headache. I think either the D300 or D700 would be great for surface images.

I have had a lens fail and a body fail while traveling. I could image "going off the deep end" if I had a body fail on my U/W system after traveling half way around the world!

I think a cheaper route is to just get a D300 housing and play with the lenses I have (10.5 and 12-24) or perhaps get a Tokina 10-17 as well. Learn, play, adjust and see what happens when it all shakes out.

I would love to down size the number of lenses and just go DX or FF, but I already have a D700 and can't seem to pass up the U/W advantages of DX./

The gamble is, do I wait for a possible announcement or go for it now, which will allow me to play before I go to Tonga in September.

    Ahh!

Thanks so much for your input!

  11. The limited production run of the S&S D700 housing seems inconsistent with continuation of an identical body. Did S&S know something in advance? :drink:

This is what I would be worried about on a hypothetical D700X. See how the controls on the right side of the review screen have been implemented on the D300S compared to the D300: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0907/09073006d300Shandson.asp

(scroll down about 2/3). Adding video (among other changes) might have cost housing compatibility for upgrading from the D300 to the D300S and this may happen again.
