How many people are starting to get excited about the announcement from RED on the 30th Oct? Well obviously I am as posting thing in anticipation
I reckon there must be thousands looking to get a form of either Scarlet or Epic...I've seriously lost interest in RED and Scarlet and any other colour of camera... It will be nice to see what they come up with but will I get it ... Nah !!! what the hell would I use it for apart from it looking good on my shelf and impressing peeps on here (for a month) with my new cam ... RED wasn't the ' guaranteed work ticket' that most hoped for so I doubt Scarlet will...

I reckon there must be thousands looking to get a form of either Scarlet or Epic...I have fallen for the annoucement thing from Red/Scarlet so many times now, that I am like Dean on this one. If or when it comes I will check it out. But I heard that it was delayed until next year, but you know how all these things go. Here's to waking up on October 30 and seeing the Scarlet

yeah it's funny, I was pretty over it too, but am keen to see what they can do. I definitely don't think that Scarlet will be ready until '10 but the thing that I am keen on is the fact that due to Scarlet and Epic having similar sized bodies and interchangable modules is that the potential for only having to own one housing for a decent amount of time.
One of the real bonuses of RED though is that I reckon they have pushed the big manufacturers to produce a higher level of product. Personally I am really keen on seeing what Canon are doing at the moment regarding a solid state cam with the 5D sensor.

Well, I'm on the market for an affordable Scarlet. Since I have no money for it right now, I am especially calm - and as Johnny just said, one of the real bonus is to push big manufacturers forward...
But if Scarlet live up the expectations it would be a great device...

Absolutely Johnny. Zoe's 7D takes nice photos, but the video is jaw dropping if you have time to set a shot up. That's the key with these vidDSLR's - you need a high degree of control of how you shoot. Now if they picked that up and put the technology into an actual Camcorder format - WOW the results would be stunning.

Okay so you buy a coloured camera ... So does everyone else including 'already' industry types (like many have with red)... What do you wish to achieve with this camera ??? Stock footage ??? a few amateur fim awards ??? A contract with Disney nature ??? big companies just use what they have already, 'LIFE' was filmed on the Panny varicam (even tho I know alot of shooters hate them) ... Sony have re introduced DVCAM or DVCAM capable units ( PD175p/ EX1r) because (so i've been told) asian countries still use this format for 90% of their broadcast (correct me if 'm wrong Drew) ...
Okay we all love the 'Latest and greatest' and I jumped on that bandwagon with the Ex1 where it sat for months in my office while I was still earning off the A1 !!! ... I wish i'd have waited for the Ex3

If scarlet does do all it says on the tin then great !!! what a camera !!! but does it say in the small print 'Guaranteed work'

I'm interested to find out what peeps expect to gain or would use this little box of magic for exactly... ??? I expect it will be pretty costly with all the add ons...

Even if Scarlett does make an official appearance with all she is suppose to do. It will take months before you get your hands on one and a couple of years for a decent housing to complement this ever changing "work in progress". Very little interest in my case.

i'm definitely interested. if a fixed model comes out around the previously announced $3750 price point it could be awesome for underwater use. the ability to shoot 120 fps, shoot in RAW, the reported 12.5 stops of dynamic range in the mysterium-x sensor, etc. it all sounds awesome to me!
i'm not looking for any kind of "work ticket" or anything like that. i'm always on the lookout for a great camera though!

I wonder how much time you need to spend on getting focus right. With the level of detail you get on 3K - 4K sensors, anytime the focus is slightly off, it will be very noticable.
-
Also, editing with AVCHD is bad enough, what kind of hell beast super computer would we need to edit 4k RAW files! Sounds like a recipe for pulling hair out to me!

You edit in Pro Res and it still isn't as bad as AVCHD... focus will be another matter though at 4-5K though

Well there we go - still no firm dates - more promises. Looks good but ........WHEN !
This is frustrating to say the least

When is definitely the key!! I like the idea Epic X is being postponed...I need time to save more $$ , I hope they release Scarlett the same way, to Red One owners at a special discount price!
-
the anouncement for scarlet is....*drum roll*...the announcement will be Nov 30! lol... boy that sucked. i still want my scarlet though.
-
Crappy announcement...no dates and nothing major other than if you own a RED one then you get first dib's at a product that aint going to work that well for a while
-
Crappy announcement...
yeah, pretty sloppily handled. getting everyone excited for a big announcement and then punting scarlet to next month probably wasn't the best way to do it. also one wonders why they're not posting more images and video from the camera they're getting ready to launch, epic-x? i mean pictures of the redmote circuit boards are kind of interesting but where's the video samples and the still samples?
also, i'm nit-picking but...looking at their PDF style announcement (that they initially left one of the scarlet models off of) it just looks hasty and sloppy. considering the announcement was announced weeks in advance you'd think they might put a bit more effort into it. hopefully, they're just heavily focused on camera development and this fell through the cracks.
hopefully, next month will go smoother. we'll see!

Guys, it's all about marketing and that's how it'll always be with smaller companies like Red which need hype. The Ikonoskop is the same way but handled more sloppily by media standards.
Giving it to the right people to do a high profile film is more important than actually having a real product that sells.
The big boys like Canon can always squeeze a product out quickly... plus even with 30 years of AF experience, they can screw up so one has to be extra wary of the AF promised on a newer company. It'd be great if they came up with a better AF system, especially for video. But then all those cinematic lenses would be useless unless they have a system like the Zeiss ZE lenses on Canon bodies, which confirms focus on a manual lens.

"Obsolescence Obsolete" is starting to kick these guys, HARD!
What does the announcement mean? I guess it really hits hard to those who were looking to sell their RED's, I know a few people who were toying with that idea. Not many folks were riding the wave of success they thought they would be on after dumping a Bagzillion $$'s for a few pounds of what some folks though would turn them into the next Spielberg. Before the announcement one could sell the camera and ownership to a buyer, thus incurring and additional cross over fee at RED of course. Well on the 30th of October it was announced that as of the 29th of October that system would cease to exist!! Hmmm, nice heads up there guys. The option open to the owners now is that they've pretty much been corralled into an upgrade for an EpicX, at an additional $10.5k sometime next year, or relinquish any future upgrade options from the RED Digital Cinema Company on ther RED One's.
The people who stuck by the company during the initial start up, putting their faith and belief in what was, and pretty much still is, a work in progress, have been royally rewarded for their loyalty with a swift kick to the plums.
Nice going Jim.

Red is a business and it makes no sense for them to let R1 owners know what their plans are. The advertising sounds great but the reality is technology is so rapid that it's tough to keep the same design and still add features since new features requires new ICBs etc. The industry was caught up in the hype and they managed to sell a few thousand R1.
On their side, they are offering a new Mysterium X sensor for the R1, so they are keeping with the promise of an upgradeable product. The R1 will roll on. Just not the way present owners who wanted a longer term product would like. Still at 3k(4k bayered) it'll work for most feature films and below.
