What do you mean it makes no sense to let R1 owners know what their plans are? What a load of tosh. The company was built on the loyalty and trust of hundreds, if not thousands of folks who believed in what Jim was trying to do. An open architecture that allowed the everyday man a glimpse into the working s of what it took to get something like this off the ground and to an extent be a part of that by offering feedback and suggestions for cameras and feature sets. The tactics deployed in the last few days pretty much just sends a message out of 'Thanks, got your cash, time to move on" and after everything that was said about the respect for the early adopters of the camera, myself included. I think Jim and the company just took a huge nose dive in the estimations of many over the past days.
Cheers,
Mark.
Well that's the problem with marketing hyperbole. People get caught up in it. It was a calculated risk for Red to surprise customers with a cut-off date. It'll piss off some customers, but the options will work for the majority who want to continue carrying on with the Red design train.
The R1 is still a viable camera and will work for stuff needed at 3k and below. They are offering an upgrade MX sensor which will get you 4k and probably a few more accessories which will trickle down from EPIC-X. That's what most DPs were expecting anyways. Unlike film which was pretty much a standard medium, digital is now about data and sensors. There's no way any design will have the longevity of a 30 year old well oiled Arri or Panavision. Just not possible.
Hold on !!! I thought the RED camera was toooo futuristic and the format wayyyy to high for immediate use unless it was super compressed anyway and now its being upgraded ??? I was told you wouldn't be able to view Red footage RAW for years (maybe that was just on TV's) so whats EPIC footage going to be, TV ready in 2021 ???
I agree with Mark and Drew in parts, They are a business and it was obvious they would upgrade the RED, but I didn't think soooo soon ... And they should have been a lot more faithful to their faithful ... But if you bought a RED off of someone only to find out later you could have had Scarlet/EPIC you'd be pissed !!! It would be just passing the buck in a way ...
Lesson to be learned ... theres seems to be no freaking loyalty in any area of media/business everyones out for themselves .... Then we should all know that... Well apart from me I'm nice to everyone
