Nauticam D90 Housing compared to other options?

  1. I saw this on the main site:

Looks like a killer combo. I suspect it'll be MUCH less expensive than the D300 and Sea & Sea housing, plus you have optical connection options, etc. without needing special mods done.

What's people's take on this? (I understand, of course, that few have had a chance to actually see the housing in person at this point)

Why will it be so much cheaper ? Price for the housing seems to be 2295Euro

That puts it at $3400 and that appears to not include ports.

Admittedly, that does include some unknown metric buttload of VAT which you might not have to pay but that on the face doesn't seem MUCH less expensive if any less. Maybe I am missing something?

I haven't seen final pricing on the housing... where did you see that?

Even if the housing ends up similar in price to the Sea & Sea ($2900 at Reef), though, the D90 is a lot cheaper than the D300.

  4. ... metric buttload of VAT...

Well, you know, if you don't like tax you can go and live where you pay insurance, instead...

... and who said underwater photography was cheap?

Read Robert Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", and look for the loonies motto.

PS Go metric or miss Mars!

  5. PS Go metric or miss Mars!

Wasn't the motto at NASA "If you use metric and I use imperial then we'll make sure that we plant this probe into Mars damn hard!"?

  6. The USA Retail Price is $2300. 10 Bar has been appointed a distributor for Europe, but the housing is from a separate manufacturing company (Nauticam International).

  8. Housing sure looks nice. Im excited to see it at DEMA

  9. I think my Aquatica looks a lot nicer and more robust :uwphotog:

  10. The USA Retail Price is $2300. 10 Bar has been appointed a distributor for Europe, but the housing is from a separate manufacturing company (Nauticam International).

So $600 less than the Sea & Sea D300 housing.

    Factor in $1700 for the D300s vs. $800 for the D90, and you're looking at $1500 savings for a D90 vs. a D300.

Although we need to know how port costs compare, I suppose, but otherwise, there you go. Of course, you can use optical connections with this housing, I don't think you can with the Sea & Sea.

(I realize I'm comparing Oranges and Tangerines a bit, since there technically aren't any D300s housings yet, but Backscatter reports that mods should be simple and fairly minor to get things going again, so this will have to do for comparison's sake.)

$2300 is more than the Aquatica. But still, the optical strobe option is nice... I don't think the Aquatica can do that. And it's a little less than the Nexus, and seems likely to be more readily available in the US.

Interesting... if I ever get the money together I'm going to have some tough decisions to make. LOL

  11. The optical connection is definitely nice. The other great thing is that the housing will have adapter rings so you can use ports from most of the major SLR housing manufacturers...which will allow an easy and cheap transition from different manufacturers.

  12. I have info from fun-in that Nauticam D90 is retails at US$2070 in Asia due to an introductory price at the launch. Apparently, fun-in is named as one of the distributor. PM me for link/info for ports/adapters pricings if anyone is interested. They make their own ports too.

#1 -- I already did move, 13 yrs ago

#2 -- I never said it was cheap, and have spent far more than I ever wanted to on UW imaging equipment!

  14. So $600 less than the Sea & Sea D300 housing.

If that is indeed the housing price, then it does come in what I would say was "somewhat cheaper" Heh.

I have the S&S D300 housing and it's working pretty good, but I do wish I had waited for the Aquatica to get the deeper depth limit on the housing ... oh well.

  15. Has anyone gone DEMA and seen this housing? Interested in it

Patience  , DEMA does not start until tomorrow (04 Nov).

We expect photos and a full report! LOL

I'll have to wait for DEMA to return to LV... I'm not schlepping across the country for it.

  18. That's odd, I just phoned Fun-in and was told that $2300 is the price for the housing. They claimed that they don't know of an introductory launch price.

    Best check that one again.
