Was just wondering what people were using to review their footage when you're travelling?
With weight being an expensive problem nowadays I no longer take a laptop with me, but it would be great if there was a device with a nice, not too large screen, to view (not edit) that HD footage that you've just shot and can't wait 'til you get home to look at!! Is there a tablet/pad out there that you can do this with....I've been trawling the internet, but can only find info on inbuilt camcorders, nothing about importing? Or is my best bet a Netbook, in which case do you have any recommendations?
Many thanks as ever for your help and advice,
Jo
Hi Jo,
I have a Vosonic VP8870, you just stick your SD card in upload it, format it if you want, then take it out, you have a 4.3" screen to view all your images from on a 320GB 2.5" SATA drive, you also get a radio and can also upload movies to it, and also use it as a storage device for other files. I got mine from Amazon. There are other makes from the US but the I think this is the best one available in the UK (well it was 15 months ago!)

Hiya Paul,
I'm afraid my camcorder doesn't have a removable card, the footage is stored on an internal hard drive, so I'd need to connect via USB. Maybe when I upgrade next year, I might be able to do this, the VP8870 does look nice!!
Many thanks,
Jo
so I'd need to connect via USB.
Yes you can do that too
What about AVCHD footage? It does not seem to support this format...
Have just checked on the Vosonic website and there's no mention of AVCHD being supported (my footage is currently in AVCHD). I would also like a slightly larger screen, as my camcorder is 3.5" and the Vosonic is 4.2". I'd like to be able to check the focus on say a 7-10" screen if poss.
Netbook must be the way then Jo, I see Apple now have a 11" macbook air! Thats nice, thin, and small  My 13" macbook air has the same volume as a normal 10" netbook, bigger screen too for the poor sighted folk like me
I have a couple of readers, but they do not seem to playback. As Scuby said, the MacBook Airs are real nice for travel, we took an 11" on a trip. It is real small and real portable. Even was able to do some basic editing on it. The maxed out (largest hd of 128 Gigs and 4 GB RAM) is the one we used. But you can pick up a refurbed with 2GB Ram and 64 Gig drive for $849.
iVideo is a really user friendly piece of software to use too it comes free with the mac
Agreed, the is alot of power in all the iApps.....though Garageband, iPhoto, iMovie are more consumer friendly than Final Cut Studio, I have used those alot and they are real good for travel in terms of not taking alot of space on hard drives and still allow editing and the rest.
Hmmm, very tempting. May have to start saving my pennies!!!
I was kinda hoping that the iPad 2 might have been the solution, but alas they say even with the photo connector/USB thingumy that it won't work......dammit, as Jack Bauer would say!!
have to wait for the ipad10 then

I'm surprised there is no tablet out yet geared towards photographers with loads of built in memory etc. Adobe should branch into one
I suppose it depends on where you are heading... I sometimes ask nicely and borrow the dive centre/boats laptop/PC/TV (contact them to make sure they have compatible equipment) or even a fellow diver if they have one to review footage. I once used a netcafe in Malta to look at the days results...

If all you want to do is check HD footage .. does the camera not have an HDMI output you can connect to a tv ?
then you could easily check your footage, almost everywhere has TV's with HDMI now. Don't they ?
Hi Sjspeck, Yeah, the Archos products look great, but looks like it's HDMI out only and no USB in, so no way to connect it to review unfortunately......unless someone can correct me on this?!!

Hmmm......a gap in the market...maybe you're on to something here Paul!!!
Hiya Dean and Giles,
Yeah, maybe I'll just have to get cheeky and ask to borrow their tv to plug in to review......must remember to take the cables with me!!! I like your thinking!!
Thanks one and all for your help,
Jo
What I have done if the hotel has HDTV is to take the camera cables and plug into that. Recently I was at a resort with no TVs, so I already had my portable DVD player that I use on the plane to watch movies, it has a video input and a wide screen. I know it is not true HD but at least I can check the video levels, focus, and framing. I found this model on Ebay, I wish I could tell you the model but I loaned it out to. someone.
