D7100 or D600

Now that the D610 is coming out, many D600's are for sale used.

Is the D7100 better choice for underwater and topside or de D600 ?

Will it matter much in lens choice, i have an 60 micro Nikon and the tokina fisheye.

De 60 will be just a 60mm on the d600, but on The D7100 its an 85mm.

Take a look ate the "Is DX done?" thread. I feel that many camera companies will be phasing out DX DSLR's.

It confuses me.

If I understand it, it is that nikon DX will be the more lower end consumer body's and the FX camera like the D800 is a much better choice.

I'm looking for a body that at least take me six years further...

It appears to me that the D7100 is everything an underwater shooter needs. It is not clear to me what one gives up in comparison to a "professional camera" like my D300. The 7100 has a weather sealed body and an AF system with the best. All I need to do is give up my compact flash cards and what else? The DPreview indicates that the D-7100 is at least equal to the d-600 overall according to my reading. (Your mileage may vary)

The 60mm is still a great lens on a full frame camera.

Which lenses are mainly used underwater with a full frame ?

15mm Sigma Fisheye, 16mm Nikon Fisheye, Nikon 16-35 (arguably best choice) 17-35, 14-24 (arguably worst choice), 24-85 for a mid range zoom.

Oh, here we go...

16-35 is a great lens but slow, I'm trading it for the 17-35 f2.8. And forgotten is the 105VR for macro.

24-85? really?? that lens is poor and doesn't focus very close.

My four favorite FX lenses for U/W are

1. Nikon 105mm VR

2. Nikon 16mm Fisheye

3. Nikon 60mm micro

4. 16-35mm W/A zoom

Now we now we should change WA lens on FX format.

But that dusn't answer my question, will the d7100 be a good bet for the coming years above and under water ?

Or should i buy a secondhand d7000, i have a housing already of that one...

Is the d7100 better in focusing and resolution...

Buy good glass. Try to get lenses that are not DX-only. Know that whatever camera body you buy will be obsolete in 4-5 years.

At this moment i only have only Three FX lenses and two DX :

Nikon 50 1.8

Nikon 60 micro af-d

Nikon 70-200 F2.8

Nikon 18-105

Tokian 10-17 Fisheye.

Kenk pro 300 1.4 teleconverter

So i have to switch two lenses, and the 18-105 i dont use it regularly.

Does the tokina work wit a 1.4 kenko teleconverter on FX ?

A D800 would be awesome :-)

I saw on alexander mustard that the D800 was the most used camera on the macro lembeh workshop.

Yes, the D800 is all that. The Autofocus is the same as the D4 (awesome), low light performance is great, the fast shutter speed and flash sync speeds are nice too.

I did not know that it was such a fantastic camera. So a d800 in ikelite, would be much better then d7100 in aluminum housing. Or wait a year and then search for used aluminum housing ? Does the Tokuna 10 17 works with 1.4 teleconverter on the d800 ?

For the past year I have been shooting a D800 in an Ikelite housing (I just switched to an Aquatica housing). I have been VERY happy with the D800. My previous DSLR was the D300. I did not upgrade to FX until I could get a camera that had a sensor with a higher pixel density than the D300. That way, I was not "giving up" anything with respect to the magnification of my macro lenses. I can crop any part of one of my FX images from my D800 to mimic the 1.5 crop factor of a DX sensor, and still have more pixel info and resolution than the complete RAW file from my D300. Also, the corner sharpness of my W/A images is superior.

eventhough that I have the d800. I believe that the d7100 is a brilliant Camera for UW.

Especially, given the Lenses that you have.

I would clearly go for the d7100 + an Alu Housing => you will get a very good System that way.

60mm is the go to lense for DX macro.

105mm is the go to lense for FX macro ( and super macro).

If you move to FX, then you can pretty much Forget your Tokina.

FX Fisheye: Sigma 15mm or Nikon 16mm

FX WA: Nikon 16-35mm ( I have tried the 17-35mm for UW, but I did not like it).

=> You would need a bunch of new lenses

You also get away with a smaller Domeport in DX!

I think Erik summarises things very well, although if you could afford a D800, new housing and replacing lens then go for it! Mind you I would personally

never consider housing it in an Ikelite. As far as the speculation regarding the impending demise of DX, well it's just that; speculation.......

I have a D7100 now for topside nature images. I upgraded from the D7000 and I love it. Would love to house it and if I had the cash would do so.

Will the D7100 will be enough for you for a few years? That all depends on how well can you resist upgrading. There is no doubt it is an excellent crop

sensor DSLR capable of producing high quality images now and for as long as you continue to own and use it.
