Sof Ikelite's housing for the Nikon D-70 ??

  1. Sof Ikelite's housing for the Nikon D-70 ??

I've read some posts that imply that the Ikelite housing for the D-70 is being shipped. I have one on back order and hope to get it in time for an upcoming trip.

My dive store called Ikelite today and was told that no housings had been shipped yet, that Ikelite was waiting for some parts to be delivered and did not know when they would be shipping.

Anyone know what's going on here? Are the housings that have been mentioned on this forum pre-production models, or did my dive shop get bad information?

    Thanks.

  2. John, as far as I know, only 1 early release housing has been made available to the public.

I've been told that shipping will begin this week.

  3. A few more fingers and a few less employees on vacation would help product delivery. We are shipping the second batch of housings this week. Dietz will have his by Friday. These housings are already committed and we will not start more until we can satisfy the embarrassing Canon D-10 situation. We start drilling and hammering on these immediately. Fortunately, we do not care to hide their beauty and visibility with white paint like some sources............

  4. Thanks Ike....you attention is appreciated....Kimberly and I can't wait

  5. production backlog?

Well, I hope that I am as lucky! I ordered my Ike D70 housing a month ago from UWCP and have no clue when to expect one to show up. I certainly hope Ikelite will be able to fill outstanding orders before shifting production to another line.

I've had a great time getting to know my D70, and think it's a great camera. But if I have to wait until December to get a housing then I have made a mistake.

  6. Hi Ike,

As you should know, when metals go into the marine environment, coatings (aka paint) are one of the most important components of the corrosion protection system. Aquatica's paint is tough and durable and provides a seal between the AluminIum and the environment.

If you're worried about a flood, get a moisture alarm - it's only $25 now fer chrissakes.

    Cheers

  7. A symbol must be needed to indicate when I am teasing. The painting barbs are at aluminum housings requiring paint which conceals the inner beauty of their contents. I even suggested on another forum switching from white to clear paint. And then many of us also joke about which type housing is a chick magnet. Lighten up............

  8. Hmm...how about a 4-armed upside-down octopus? :-)

    Cheers

    James

  9. Believe it was Laz who did the upside-down octopus which was absolutely priceless. He is a quick thinker............

I hope this is an exaggeration... Both my Aquatica housings have had problems with the paint flaking around the port. I thought this was just a nuisance, or even a potential hazard if the flakes got near the oring seats, but I never worried about potential deterioration of the aluminum.

Yeah, I know what you are saying. I have a trip to Cozumel the first week in July, and then a cruise to Belieze, Coz, Cancun, and Rotaan a few months after that.

I haven't lost complete faith in getting an Ike housing, but I'm keeping Sea and Sea in the back of my mind.

It seems that Ryan at UWCP was able to finagle at least one more housing out of Ike and will be sending it my way directly! With any luck I'll be able to take it for a spin next weekend.

  13. Wow, I guess I got lucky and got one of the first batch. I took my D70 and Ikelight housing underwater for the first time yesterday and everything worked great. It was my first experience using an underwater housing with digital camera(used a Nikonos V before), and although I have alot to learn, it was the most fun I've had taking pictures underwater so far! I think it will be worth the wait for the housing.

  14. Let's see some shots KC......I'll be getting my D70 wet for the first time next weekend

  15. I just got word from my Dive shop that my housing has arrived. Oh joy - oh bliss. Thank you Ikelite.

  17. My D70 housing has arrived!

Well, despite the best efforts of the weather I managed to recieve my D70 housing today from Ryan at UWCP.

I decided to suppliment my DS-125 with a DS-50, each using manual controllers. I recieved a single TTL cord to connect the controllers, which mean I can only attach one on them directly. Short of going to a dual cable, i know that I can use the optical pickup on the EV controller to slave the DS-50 to the DS-125.

One question: How can I configure the slaved strobe & EV controller up to match the output of the first strobe? Can the EV controller do this? If not can I use my TTL controller?

Here's a photo of the new rig:

  18. TTL controller, watching the strobe with manual controller connected by sync cord, will emulate what it sees.

Ryan suggested a special short dual sync cord to attach two manual controllers to the housing bulkhead. Seems logical so will work it............

  19. Spoke to Ryan today about the D70 housing and he was very helpful to me. Already have a Tamron 90 which will work well for macro (about the sharpest glass in my bag and I have nice glass) and will probably pick up a 15mm Sigma on ebay for around 360 unless someone else has a better option. I can reuse my ultralight arms and ys120 strobe with some adapters and I will be all set. Now to plan another dive trip.....oh and get this by the wife.

    Tony

  20. Congrats on your new rig! :)

I connect my strobes to the D70 like you have yours with two manual controllers and a single sync cord. I don't see a problem with this as mine always fires. I like having two manual controllers vs a TTL controller because it gives me total flexibility. I would want this even more with an asymetrical strobe setup like yours. I would want to use the DS50 to light the foreground and the ds125s for the background. In this case you will want different light levels for each. In my setup with two DS125s I could see the argument for only one controller in order to reduce task loading, but I went for this for better control.

I also like having one strobe as an independant slave. I can detatch one strobe completely underwater and lend it to my brother for his 5050. I'm also interested in trying some backlighting shots where having the strobe as a seperate system would be helpful.

James pointed out that you can have other people's strobes trip yours and that's valid, but I don't work that closely with other photographers.
