Drowned Inon Z240 - anything worth salvaging?

30 posts
  1. So I managed to drown my first strobe on Sunday. Poorly installed O-ring on the battery compartment lid. My own fault.

Except for the obvious solution of cussing, swearing, kicking my own arse and buying a new strobe, is there anything worth salvaging as spare parts before I deliver the cadaver as electrical garbage for recycling?

  2. Woah, bummer. Really sorry Storker.

Put a clock face in the battery opening and make an amusing clock out of it.

  3. Check with Joe at Fun-In. Repaired a flooded D-2000 for me.

  4. Isn't the battery section of the Z240 a sealed portion of the flash so if it floods it doesn't effect the rest of flash?

  5. Yes, BUT: If saltwater comes in contact with the batteries, they release gas, pressure is built up, and this pressure pushes the corrosive cocktail into the strobe. Happened to one of my Z240s. I was lucky: I disassembled the strobe as far as I could, gave it a good freshwater rinse, let it dry - and alas, it has been working for more than two years now.

Had the same problem - a twisted o-ring that I did not notice. My fault, of course, but the Inon solution of sealing the battery compartment is less than ideal (IMHO).

Storker, for the next Inon you might want to invest into a second o-ring that you put into the cap before you dive (pics from h2o-tools.de):

One for the one I've got left, one for the replacement. What are the dimensions?

And how do you disassemble the Z240s? I guess it's too late for me; I found out two days after the disaster, when I was taking out the batteries to recharge them...

  7. Look into Inon's trade-in situation through an authorized dealer (I used a Reef Photo) before you go chopping things up or selling on EBay.

I flooded a Z240 last year & was able to get a decent discount on a new replacement Z240 with return of my flooded strobe.

Only caveat (per Inon) was that the serial number plate must be intact with the number intact.

  8. Isn't the battery section of the Z240 a sealed portion of the flash so if it floods it doesn't effect the rest of flash?

Mine wasn't. There's water inside the flash.

Does this actually work better.? I remember someone (backscatter or reef photo) said not to do this. I like the idea.

  10. Well I am guessing it is not Reef saying anything; they sell the H2O tools kit.

    Bill

  11. Well, a new strobe has been ordered. I couldn't find anything on the web about a trade-in program from Inon, and neither of the two dealers I asked could confirm anything either. So it may be something from the US dealer(s). I managed to negotiate a 10% discount from one of them, though. It's scheduled to arrive sometime next week.

So I guess it's time to break out the screwdrivers and enjoy a post-morten on the carcass to check out how an Inon looks on the inside.

And for the future, I won't assemble the rig in the evening, when the light is poor and the BAC approaches the legal limit for driving. I'd also appreciate hearing about any real life experience with the H2O kit.

  12. And how are you going to explain that one to Mrs S, eh?

  13. I did a post flood through Reef Photo in Fl.

I believe it saved about $200 or so?

  14. And how are you going to explain that one to Mrs S, eh?

    No problem..

It's a replacement for stuff that broke, not a new toy. Besides, it saved her the hassle of coming up with a BD present this year :-)

All heart, that's what's so cool about you, Storker (other than, of course, living near the coldest place south of Pluto), all heart.

  16. Maybe u can post on eBay or something for flooded strobe.. And see if anyone wants Savage parts...

  17. If you just want the O-ring they are size 130. Available by the hundred for a few bucks.

    Thank you!

I ordered one of the H20 kits for the o-ring after I flooded my Z240 and no one could answer the question about the H2O kit o-ring size!

Now, where to source just one o-ring...

  19. I've got one of these kits and have split the extenders between two strobes for the power adjustment on both. I may get a second kit eventually.

Figuring out o-ring sizes is pretty easy with a decent ruler, but you need the o-ring first. :-)
