Panasonic GH4 advanced settings

  1. I noticed that the GH4 has also a hue setting in the photo style that other Panasonic don't have. Does anyone use it?

  2. I haven't seen anyone nail an underwater wide angle look with a GH* that is as nice as nicely done Canon 5D footage.

I agree, it's not that the GH4 is 'bad' or anything, it's just the ambient lit stuff I've seen from the Canons (don't know which ones) just blew we away. Must find the one from OceanShutter from the bomber in Truk, blew me away with the colour.

As to the Hue setting Intercepter, no I haven't played with that. Never know that setting could be the magic bullet in all this...

  3. I think the hue can help in case there is a standard cast that the camera pushes. I find Panasonic greener than canon and Sony and to give a yellow cast when used with urpro filters. The problem doesn't occur with magic but I have yet to develop a push on Magic filter for my wet lenses

  4. The cameras may be close with daylight WB topside, but I think it's in underwater manual white balance that the Canon cameras excel. I haven't seen anyone nail an underwater wide angle look with a GH* that is as nice as nicely done Canon 5D footage. But I'd still like to believe it's possible to get close with the right techniques in white balance and post production.

IMHO color matching camera on land is almost useless. Once underwater, where the ambient light is highly filtered, camera WB algorithm could be severely screwed up.

I remember Panasonic TM700 and TM900 were considered the best consumer camcorders on land. Amazing colors and definition.

Someone tried to bring them underwater with some all purpose housings... Results were terrible: no matter which WB hey were using, water was green green green.

It was like the camera firmware or maybe sensor was completely deceived from light spectrum underwater.

    Agreed.

I think, this is where we are heading here - really need a Canon and a GH4 in the same place, at the same depth to at least get a baseline from which we can work with.

I think this is the video you mention:

I do not think this is simple Canon mojo. Not only at least.

It was shot in ambient light but Dustin made an amazing CC job.

We cannot think that gear is everything.

    PS

How much the airplane is deep?

  7. My GH4 deal is off so for now will have to focus on the lx100

I think it rests at around 15m-20m

  9. There are so many things one can do to tweak the colour on a GH4. Besides adjusting hue and saturation in a photo style, you can also perform manual fine adjustments on any type of white balance including manual.

  10. The controls in the photo style are not different from any other Panasonic mft except for hue. My understanding is that saturation and white balance adjustments including colour and tint shift the colour palette whilst hue adds colour if that makes sense?

  12. While I do not know which camera (Canon or Sony) was used in the natural light shallow shots, CC applied seems very close to the Dustin video mentioned above. Great video!

That video is done by one of my friends (Lee), he uses Canon 6D, often white balance on a white board attached to a loc-line attached to the top of the housing.

  14. I have now a Sony rx100 Mark IV that has really powerful settings. One thing that helped me clarify was the 0-256 or 0-235 range. I found out using Sony documentation that what I want is really 0-235 that clips at 100%. The 0-255 is for video and computer use whilst the 0-235 is for Tv broadcast I find this to be better for me.

    Correction broadcast is 16-235

    Computer is 0-255

So if you produce a 0-255 clip and then watch it on a to medium it clips out the darkest and lightest part

On the other hand if you use 16-235 on a computer is looks a bit dull

  15. Whatever camera I use, I usually shoot at the widest luminance range available, then conform it to 16-235 with color curves in Sony Vegas Pro. So with my GH4, I'm choosing to shoot at 0-255. I remember that my RX100 Mk1 shot an unusual range of 16-240 when I measured it. Of course, adjusting the luminance is an unwelcome extra step for some, but if you're color-correcting/grading anyway, then why not shoot the wider range? (unless you're shooting log, in which case you probably don't have the choice).

  16. I guess the answer is that with a 100 Mbps codec at 8 bits am not planning to grade at all. If I had an external recorder of course it would be totally different. I found that playing with black gamma you can push the greys toward black and I don't mind the lack of pure white especially as sands tends to clip anyway a lot

  17. Sorry if you guys think I should not use this post to launch my doubts but I didn't want to open a new one for such a thing.

1.I can't get rid of the AF icon on screen even setting the Touch AF off in the menu.

    2. I can't find the Continuous AF option to add it to a Fn button
