Try simply to use the camera as per manual and forget how you used to do it
It works today and you don’t need to stress out
If not then you can enjoy your not functioning system
What else can I say? You are the one with problems not me

GH5 focus issue with external monitor

Hence, in the end you refuse to try the settings I wrote because you will lose face? I know you tried but you cannot admit it.
Your camera (without monitor) is working exactly as mine.
The worst thing about this endless discussion is not about you and me. It's the fact that on the forum will remain misleading information for all users will come here to get info about this topic.

Gentlemen
I suggest we end this conversation. Future readers can see both your views and draw their own conclusions.
There's often lots of debate on WP - and it's usually done pretty politely and with respect. Let's keep it there, eh? There are enough fora and websites which make utterly depressing reading because of the level of nastiness and abuse. Happily this is not one of them.
Time out?

Sorry if this did not come out as expected I have a been surprised by the tones
As everybody here knows I use the GH5 for photos and video both on land an underwater. If I see someone has a problem I try to help solving it as in this case. It seems it has not been well received and am sorry for that this was not the intention

I'm sure it wasn't, Massimo.
Thanks for the response. We all move on, right?

I recently upgraded from a GH4 to GH5 camera, and like a lot of members here found the back focus button wouldn’t work with the GH5 once a monitor was connected and switched on.
A lot of internet searching offered no working solution so I figured a ‘half press’ on the shutter release was my only option if I wanted to use a monitor.
Then a friend (who also runs a GH5) provided the answer, at least for me.
He suggested I set HDMI Record Output to 1080 rather than 4K or auto, and it worked!
So, in the menu:
Motion Picture>HDMI>Rec Output>Down Convert>1080… (p or i).
Good luck!

It's good to know I'm not crazy. For this bug I had to change Backfocus settings.
Could you please share your AF-Lock settings?
Thanks

Sure, so in the menu it's: Custom>Focus/Release Shutter>AF/AE Lock>AF-On.
This appears to work regardless of the setting (AFS/AFF, AFC or MF) on the back button.
Hope it works for you!

When you monitor you never set resolution to auto or 4k because this increases hdmi lag and the monitor anyway only shows 1080p
The default is 1080p and hdmi audio off
Now since the GH5 there is a change to the video continuous autofocus with hdmi you can’t set it to recording start
It is either alway on or off.
This means that if the continuous autofocus is on with hdmi and the lever is not in manual the camera focuses all the time and the af lock button when set to lock just locks because the camera never stopped focussing
If you set continuous autofocus to off it will never autofocus before or after and af on performs autofocus. Shutter has no effect
If you had previously used the option 1 camera to focus only when recording and you pressed the af on with lock the camera would focus then lock it and when you were starting recording it wouldn’t change
However with hdmi connected this option is greyed out so you need to set the lever to off or set continuous autofocus to off in video to use the previous logic
4k 1080 etc doesn’t make a difference
The issue is the continuous af in video mode2
This mode is problematic topside and underwater as the camera keeps focussing even in standby and can’t be stopped
So what I do if I need autofocus is to leave it set and set the manual focus leaver to MF this will stop the camera to keep focussing until I switch the lever to afs or caf
This is the most effective setting as it works the same with and without hdmi connection so practically you are in manual focus to set the initial focus and if you want the camera to autofocus just move the lever
