In general, I find it to be a good practice to take a test shot of a wall before you take the camera rig for a dive. This serves to confirm that everything is turned on and connected as it should be, strobes are firing, caps are removed, etc. This is also a good opportunity to establish the pre-flash pattern when you're using Smart SL mode. It is also best practice, as suggested by Oskar, to have the strobes turned on before you splash, as this way the leak detector is functioning as the strobe is submerged, so that if you get a leak into the battery compartment, the strobe can immediately alert you about it. If you follow this routine, then the first shot will have occurred back on land, and your system will be ready to shoot (barring the need to burp a wet lens, if you have one) as soon as you splash down.
